Mega-Short SYE Time

As far as I understood it he was concerned about the RR mega short being Chinese but the JB conversions being out of stock. As far as I can tell the Chinese RR mega short is still the one being considered.

The preferred one seems to be JB. Both Adam’s and Wood sell Teraflex.

Blaine has mentioned that the Teraflex doesn’t seal as well as JB.

My Teraflex seals fine

Mine isn’t the short but it’s the advance and has been fine for 2 years

Teraflex seems to be from the land of "almost right" as well...and it's about $150 more.

I was doing some last minute reading on the Rugged Ridge Mega Short SYE and see that it's "imported". So IOW it's made of Chinesium. That isn't very comforting. JB conversion is cheaper but out of stock. As I understand it there are only 2-3 companies that make these?
I like to buy American and am willing to pay a little more if I'm getting something truly better. I don't ever plan to go above 35" tires w/o getting an Atlas or similar so I dunno if the stronger(more expensive) super-short SYE would be worth it.

I'd go with Tom Wood's shop & see what they're stocking for kits right now. They make the shafts right here in UT, their turn around is about a day once they get the measurement, and they do a package deal with the SYE.

During my SYE install my dumb ass lost something out of the Advanced Adapters kit. I forget what it was exactly but something didn't look right, it was a washer or grommet or something small. I called them up to ask them about it, confirmed that there was indeed supposed to be there, I looked around some more, still couldn't find it. Called them back up & they said they have a bunch lying around, offered to mail me one at no charge. I live right around the corner from them, so I just cruised over & it was sitting on the front counter tagged with my name.

You can't beat that place as far as service.

While on the subject...I've watched a bunch of youtube vids about SYE installs and some of them had to shorten the shift-shaft so the new back cover would clear. I'm thinking those are oddball or a different Jeep?

Older YJs and XJs pretty much, like the late 80s years. Shouldn’t be an issue for you.

The AA kit had a separate set of instructions for that but if I recall it was only for some YJ models. Wasn't applicable post-'96.

Ouch is right…I actually just finished the SYE install and will be measuring the DS as soon as I get the control arms adjusted for pinion angle. I was expecting $350-$400ish….did you get it chromed or something?

Hey ... I just want to thank all of you that posted anything to do with an SYE install, pinion adjusting, etc. Between hear and YouTube, I did my conversion with minimal issues. (some retaining and/or spring clips wrestled with me) My TJ now drives as smooth as butter. I do need to get that electronic speedometer conversion do-dad to correct for 33s, but no rush there.

Next project is deciding if regearing is worth it. Its just that I rarely use the 6th gear anymore. Not a crime, but ....
