I bought a used front Dana 44 and it came with this ARB locker. There were no gears in it. I brought the axle and locker to do the gears at our local jeep shop and they told me that this ARB will not fit with gears in the Dana 44. My Dad and I have both looked and we aren't 100% certain, but we think this ARB is supposed to go with 3.73 gears or lower. I had 4.88 put in.

I'm not sure about thinner gears and whether or not that would work for this locker, and that's ok, I have moved on from it! I am going to try and sell this and I just want to make sure I know what the hell I am selling lol!

The only stamped serial number on the case is 9 812290. I do not find an "RD" number on the flange. I also took the numbers from the bearing races they are Timken 25523 for the small side and Timken LM104912 on the air supply side. I did a google search on "ARB+LM104912" and came up with a PDF that suggests is might be an RD117, which is for a Dana 44, 30 spline, 3.73 and down. Was hoping someone might be able to confirm this.

I have also had a guy tell me on the internets that this is an older 3 piece ARB and that they are prone to failure. I'm not sure. I also called ARB, they asked me to email, I did, no response for about 4 months now.

Any ideas?

Since you bought a used 44 its probably a Rubicon housing. That would explain the 3.73 and down carrier break. Whoever owned it probably reused the stock gears, they are thick cut and need the lower numerical carrier. They are also 30 spline stock so regular Rubicon shafts would fit it.

Not an ARB guy here, but logically you have an RD117 or the older model of the same.

It is the older one but the case problem is easily solved with a bit of extra preload on the gear set and your installer is a numbnut. All he had to do was get a set of thick cut gears.

Damn, I kinda figured the installer could have made this work. Oh well. Thank you for the replies!

Any suggestions on a fair asking price? I guess it’s kind of a very specific part given it’s for a Rubicon and I can’t see anyone really wanting this if they already have a stock locker. If I am not mistaken the air entry on the axle for a Rubicon is a different diameter then it would be for an ARB, but that might not be terribly complicated to get past.

The locker isn't "for a Rubicon." The locker only requires thick cut gears for 3.73 and lower gears and regular cut gears for 3.55 and higher. The factory locker air inlet for a Rubicon 44 gets abandoned and a new hole is drilled and tapped in the housing when an ARB is installed.

In my world that is a 600ish dollar locker.
