Over-engineered breathers

Working on a few things while my Jeep is down I figured I'd post what I wound up doing to raise up my transmission / t-case / front diff breathers, along with my locker compressor air input line.

We've had a metric shit ton of rain through the new year in the PNW. I put several thousand miles on my TJR during that time, and I would say nearly 90% of it was in the rain.

When I discovered that I had a bunch of mud and rain debris getting in behind my gas cap area, I took the cap cover off and saw that my t-case and rear diff breather tubes were terminating in a bad spot. Although I'm not planning to do any deep water crossings anytime soon (or ever), I still decided to relocate the rest of the lines somewhere higher and out of direct moisture.

My jaw kinda hit the floor when I realized that there was a tiny nipple with a small nylon vent cap on top of my transmission. I had to dig it out of an inch or two of mud that burried it under my shift lever. I had just succeeded in fighting off early stages of surface rust that were starting to form on my front diff component, so taking care of this was the next logical step.

I could not get any hoses to stay on the transmissiom breather nipple, given the taper and very short height. I did some research and found a webpage where a guy put a copper elbow over his to attach tubing. Went to my local hardware store and snagged ~4-5 different size elbows to test out, and i found that a 3/8" fit perfectly snug over it.

Here are the parts that I used to prototype the tubing connector:

I wound up shortening the fatter 3/8" hose to a size just large enough to connect thr elbow with the barbed brass splice piece on he other end. I also put a small piece of 5/32 tubing on the end of it, which made it fit air tight inside of the larger 3/8" hose.

For added security, I used some Quicksteel around the base of the elbow connecting to the trans breather. I have had food luck with that stuff in the past, it goes on pretty clean and it will only come back off if you want it to (where it also comes off clean).

Here is a photo of it installed. I wound up consolidating my t-case breather tubing with this line, where I replaced the hose and connected it with a brass T-connector (and went a little crazy with conduit):

At this point, I probably should have just slapped the nylon breather cap in and ran it under the hood, but having some new and unused parts from other projects laying around, I figured that I'd engage full stupid mode just to see my idea materialize. I also didn't like the idea of running it in parallel with my new rear diff breather line inside my Jeep's roll bar padding, so what the hell?

I started recon'ing areas under the hood. My first idea was to run it in my air intake area, but I did not like the idea of my intake drawing in lots of air and particles, which may or may not make there way into the lines (probably not, but again this is full stupid mode being engaged here). I decided that i wanted it at the rear of my valve cover, up high where I had recently deleted the plastic bridge.

With that, i found a spot on the rear bracket that is pretty solid, that I figured out how to make work with a custom bracket. I took some measurements and went to work hunting down the right sized L-brackets and other parts that i woud need for my mount. The first design i came up with would support 3 or more hoses, but I still had the front diff breather tube and my locker compressor hoses to consider, and one of my objectives was to eliminate as much tubing on my Jeep as i could. I came to terms with the idea of wplicing my diff breather into the trans / t-case breather tubing vent, so all that i would need to build for were two separate runs.

I also wound up using some mini air filters that i got a while back. Here was my initial bracket:

I got it mounted shortly after, but I hated the look, so i modified it like so:

The symmetry came out much better when i configured it like this, so I then just had to get to work on my air compressor intake lines. For these, i went a little overboard again with the filtration aspect. I ported over the ORM nylon breather caps, which i then covered in some new AMSOIL prefilter material I had, which I then shoved into the little air filter, fitting very snug.

The spring loaded clips that I'm using are strong, and they hold the filters in place very solid. The great aspect about this design, is that I can reconfigure it to support 3 or more lines easy with a dofferent plate, and removing the lines (or the entire bracket) is very simple.

Here was the final prototype mounted (and yes - i am also currently working on redoing the conduit on my electrical)

I need to shop around for a cheaper source for fuel line / heater hose. The 1/4 hose that I used was priced way higher than the 3/8" and 5/32" hoses, I couldn't find any for leas than $2.99/ft locally.

Does anyone know of a better online source for quality hoses?

HOT DAMN :D. Next I’m guessing is applying diaelectric grease to all connections and then applying for your submarine permit? ;)

So admittedly I've never actually taken a hard look at the stock breathers. Are you saying they're more complicated than what you've got going on there?

It's funny you guys have had so much rain. Because down here in Salem, Oregon, we've had not much rain at all. I mean today is another dry, sunny, blue sky day! It's been amazing how nice this Winter has been. You guys must be getting all our typical rain.

Well to grok my specific situation, you'd have to understand what I have been dealing with. First, I had relocated my factory locker compressors from the unprotected area behind my skid plate to the area under the hood by the master brake cylinder (the area hat almost fits a 34 series car battery).

The 4x4 shop that the former owner purchased the lift from had modified the drivers side rear compressor / wiring bracket to accomodate the lift. They made a HUGE mess of the wiring and hose runs and tuened it into a giant rats nest, so I had to clean that up as best that I could. This involved eiminating as many lines as possible (mind you that I have an additional split-loom covered run fir my rear LED lights and the hard lines weren't staying flush along my frame).

I have one air compressor that is all but shot, it has an internal leak and until I finish building my 2-stage fully pneumatic locker compressor replacement, I wanted to ENSURE that they weren't going to takeni any additional moisture (which they apparently were with thr breather tube terminating in the gas filler neck area).

This setup might look complicated, but it eliminates a lot of tubing and I built it to be heavy duty.

I'm entertaining the idea of moving the fam down to Oregon. We vacation down there and dig the vibes and overall space vs. this state. The weather seems warmer sown there on average too #bonus

I get what you're saying, and now I understand why you're doing what you're doing. I didn't have enough background on this situation (didn't read back far enough), so I thought you were just doing this for no reason whatsoever, but it makes sense now. I've been thinking about relocating my locker compressors there as well, but I'm not sure if there's really any benefit to doing that for the use my Jeep sees.

Here in the Willamette Valley it rains and rains. However, this Winter has been some sort of a fluke. Last Winter it poured the entire time and didn't have a single sunny day that I remember. It also snowed like crazy! So this Winter is something of a fluke for sure. However, I will say that I know for a fact that it definitely rains in Seattle more than it does in Portland (as if that's possible).

But yes, Oregon is a nice place, and where we're at in Salem, you can still find houses for reasonable prices believe it or not!
 
I just did this yesterday and let me tell ya, that trans breather is a son of bitch.

I used sintered brass breathers in a square aluminum tube and 5/16" hose.

I ran a drill bit backwards inside the threads of a hose fitting to smash down and soften up the brass threads, then I slathered rtv on the little nipple on top of the trans, tapped the fitting on with a socket and hammer, then slathered more rtv around the outside. It's on there good and gosh darned tight.

Gonna redo it though. Running hose from the trans area to under the hood creates about a 2 foot length of horizontal hose where oil will collect. Not good. The oil needs to drain back where it came from or the hose may fail to vent. The trans breather hose exits up then down to the horizontal section which basically makes it impossible to drain. I took a picture of this, but it seems to have vanished from my phone. I know you like pictures in your jeep threads but you're just gonna have to use the power of imagination on this one.

I've decided to just run the hoses upward into the cab, under the front portion of the center console and then up behind the dash. This should eliminate the horizontal runs.

Here we go:

You can see how the hose goes downward. This is a no go. Over time oil will collect in the hose and wont be able to drain back into the trans.

Instead of routing it into the cab I replaced it with a 90 degree fitting.

I bored out the threads with 1/2 bit, covered the trans vent nub in rtv, and tapped the fitting on.

Pretty simple insurance even if you dont plan on doing water crossings.

Finally ended my procrastination streak and got the rear breather installed.

I used a 90 degree fitting and attached the square tube to my tuffy trunk with double sided tape and sheet metal screws. Then I ran the hose through the grommet for the tail light wires.
