Picking an Atlas

super 35, 4.11

I actually have had a Savvy 1.25” body lift on the shelf for a couple of years. I’d like to get the Atlas in without it but that seems unlikely. If I do the body lift, I can clear 35s with my current suspension. If I do that, I’d probably re gear from my current 4.11 (which is actually good on road with 33s and the 25% stroker power bump) to the recommended 4.88.

yep. I feel an AA order coming this week.

Sounds like a plan! That 4.88 is in order even with the 4.6L. This will be cool. Of course, you CaN install the Atlas without a BL and stay on 33’s. Just cut everything away that’s in the way and modify the seat bracket.

You are convincing me, not that I needed much. Do you have the trail series with the longer tail housing that holds the stock speedo gear?
edit: also, did you go bigger on your u-joints or stay with 1310?
Rear ds had to be lengthed 2" and front shortened 2" iirc.

I thought the Atlas could be flat towed if you stopped every XXX miles and ran the engine? Maybe misunderstood or read something wrong. But it wouldn't surprise me since you can't with the STaK's either.

Edit: Since 2018 they now offer a tailhousing that allows you to flat tow the Atlas.

When I check when I bought my Jeep the did not have any flat tow capability. I did purchase it in 2017 though

I just wanted to put that out there, I have seen an awful mess from flat towing a bronco with an atlas.

I don't know when you bought your Atlas..... But it appears they do have the ability now.

And I know all about flat towing a gear driven t-case and what it does.

STaK's started off telling me I could flat tow and I followed their directions to the T. After I blew up to t-cases they decided that you couldn't flat tow anymore so I had to go buy a trailer. And I had about 5 months of down time due to this.

I didn’t buy an atlas for that reason, I have rubicrawler. I will tow the Jeep behind the motorhome. I did just purchase a trailer though.
I help a buddy of mine that does first generation broncos. Fuel injected 5.0 , AOD trans and Atlas in a lot of them.
He has a customer with a ranch in Cabo that he built a bronco about 20 years ago. The customer brought it back up to freshen it up, so it got new motor, EFI, a AOD trans and a new atlas among other needed items. Driver picked it up and was instructed to remove drives shafts to tow. He didn’t about half way down it blew up. Atlas was junk all but the case. AOD pulled the front pump and poured everything int the trash from the trans. Completely welded together.

We were never able to prove it but all the clutches in my 44RE were toast after the STaK's failed the first time. Had to have it rebuilt and a new case installed due to damage. They had to cut the t-case apart when it got back to them. Lucky for me the warranted it.

If you still want a Atlas I'd call and see what the deal is with this added feature. I prefer a trailer now since my tires are more Off-Road.

Once the transfer case locks up it will start spinning the output shaft of the trans, the front pump is the lube pump on auto transmissions ( other than Saturn) so it isn’t long before lack of lubrication tears up the auto trans.
I spoke to a gal when I was towing my samurai, she had one and the transfer case doesn’t have a true neutral from the factory. Hers locked up the transfer case then when the manual Locked it started rotating the motor ( I guess it turns backwards) then it threw the rod out the side of the engine before she got to her destination.

My Atlas 5:1 was already installed in my '03 when I got it from the Cal4Wheel raffle in '04. It's behind a 3550, Dana 60/44, 4:88 combo.
I called AA about flat towing and they said that I'm on my own but, suggested every 300 miles towed, disconnect it from the tow vehicle and
drive it for 5-10 miles to lubricant the T-case, then hook back up and tow for another 300 miles. Rinse/repeat.
Since I had free wheeling front hubs in the 44, I just disconnected the rear D/S at the axle and wired it to an eyelet that I installed just
for that reason. I've only flat towed it once from SoCal to MT. and then bought a 14' trailer to drag it around ever since.

Personally I hate the slush boxes rubber band effect when it comes to bumping up against a rock.
With the manual trans, I just let the clutch out and it idles up and over the rocks. If I need to stop, I just push the clutch in or turn the key off.
It's stupid slow at 98:1 crawl but so bitchin to finesse in the rocks. And if I need to go faster than 12mph in 5th gear O/D, I throw the front in neutral and the rear in high on the fly.

You won’t be able to flat tow it with the Atlas.

Unless things have changed in the last 4-5 months, that is NOT 100% accurate. I contacted Advanced Adapters a few months ago about this topic and received this response:

“Technically you can flat tow a 2 speed of any version. The standard style case that doesn’t run the flat tow tailhousing we recommend a max of 300 miles before cranking the vehicle over to start pumping oil into the tailhousing area. The flat tow tailhousing we have the standard pump that the 231 runs and you can tow that as far as you need to. I don’t know of anyone that offers a bolt on aftermarket pump for our case since it’s an entirely different case and output shaft.”
