Protective film on Headlights?

Ok, I'm about to finally dump some money on better Headlights. Then a friend said, "wow, that's alot to spend till u get a chip or scratches on it." Got me thinking, do any of u use protective film on ur Headlights? If so, how much does it reduce light output? Anyone ever use a "smoked" one?

No guards or film on my Hella's, and they haven't suffered any damage yet. Hella's have pretty good glass in them, and the headlights are kind of protected on a TJ. Eventually one will pick up a rock, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. They seem limb proof.

Almost every car on the road has plastic headlights any more, I wouldn't worry about it much.

I have Hella right now, and wouldn't worry about a $40 headlight. But I'm looking at either JW Speaker for $400 or Vision X for like $700. It would be nice to protect those, if it doesn't ruin the whole reason why I'm buying them in the first place, by majorly degrading the light.

I would think a high quality film wouldn't be too detrimental. I've thought of doing a yellow film on lights before, I've always like the yellow color on these:
