Re-key purchased half doors to match my TJ key?

even if they remove the door pin bolts, they wont be able to lift the doors off because they cant unlock the door from the inside in order to open it.

If they have the time to get hinge bolts out they have time to take 5 seconds and rip the inner door panel off by hand so they can unlock the door from inside.

The moral of the story with tj's and theft is don't leave anything you don't want stolen in or on your tj. They aren't secure vehicles. That includes the tj itself getting stolen!

Security is always measured in time, as mentioned above. I have locks on my half doors because it adds time to theft, and often but not always that's enough of a deterrent.

I'll double down on the insanity...I added power locks to my half doors and tailgate. Summer mode with the top off nothing gets locked. Winter mode with the hard top on...makes me feel better about leaving my chainsaw in the back when I use the restroom at a gas station or get groceries on the way home.

I never understand these posts. Like an one-upmanship thing I guess. Yes, you’re right TJs are suspectible to theft and that includes the doors. That isn’t new or helpful…

As I explicitly mentioned, a determined thief with tools, energy, time, motivation will always prevail. This method at least puts another roadblock in the way. Don’t like it or think its worth the trouble — no problem.

You explicitly mentioned the only way they'd get the doors off by disconnecting the lock rod is with the key.

I just pulled the lock cylinders and filed the wafers down until my key worked.
TJ doors are insanely easy to break in to so the locks are near worthless anyway.

That's funny because I pulled mine and removed the pins so any key would work but it still locks and unlocks.

I got them off eBay. I had a link in the original write up but it’s a dead link now. Probably any Chrysler wafer kit would work.

Yes, I knew rekeying wouldn’t stop a thief. For me, I simply wanted them to match the full doors.

I lost the socket for a few months. I wasn't looking forward to drilling those out and probably scraping the fenders all up. I just found it in my toolbox the other day. Bullet dodged........

Dodged a bullet for sure. I keep it in the spot in the same draw in my rollout, with a dedicated ratchet. Take it out of there and put it back right away.

I think the idea is more so the doors are locked onto the jeep - they're worth quite a bit nowadays

If they are going to take them, they will take them. I just don't want them to slash the soft windows only to get in find there's nothing to take.

Cheap ass radio with a removable face (really should do a radio delete. I never listen to it). Empty arm rest. Empty glove box. Someone could take my soft top, or the soft uppers when the halfies are on, but there's nothing else to take. And it's a manual.

You may be able to move tumblers around from slot to slot to get the locks to work May need to leave one out

The tailgate has a notch in one of the tubular hinges so all you have to do it open it partway and lift that end right out of the hinge and it's yours. Putting a hose clamp there at least prevents a quick removal.

I use one of these, after my neighbor got his tailgate stolen and said the insurance bill was $4000. The lock is basicly a hose lamp with a key.

Nice to have everything keyed the same if/when you decide to sell it.

Get the McGard locks. Enjoy the Jeep.

The cheap way to rekey is to break down until the cylinder, put in your key, and grind down the tumblers flush.
