I bought this rear bumper and carrier for $80 from a Jeep recycler and was advertised as the carrier is hard to open and needs work. I was wondering if anyone knew what brand this might be or if they know how to remove the carrier. It looks like the carrier has the stub shaft welded to it and goes through a steel sleeve on the bumper. The picture with my finger is pointing to where the carrier stub shaft pops out of the bumper sleeve. But I have been banging it for awhile now and it will not budge so I am not sure if there is some retainer I am missing.

Looks like an older Nates 4x4 bumper.

I do not know if I am looking at the correct Nates bumpers but that appears to use rectangle tubing for the lower horizontal bar on the carrier while mine is all round tube. But like I said I have no idea if I am looking at the right bumper on google images.

Squirting some Liquid Wrench or Kroil down inside from the top and bottom sure wouldn't hurt. I wouldn't waste my time or $$$ using WD-40 or PB-Blaster for that job.

Whatever you use give it time to work.

Good catch. Hopefully someone recognizes it.

Angle grinder or sawzall.

I THINK I figured it out. It looks like a dirtworx bumper. But all the images I see are just slightly different like having shackle mounts and the pivot looks to bolt from the top on the few images I found.

So I am slowly getting it separated with lots of penetrating oil and violence. I think there is just that much rust on the rotating surfaces. Definitly not the greatest design for what these Jeeps encounter but with cutoff wheels and welders, anything can be made better…or end up much worse!

Here's a close-up of the pivot on my 8 year old Dirtworx bumper as I received it from Robert. Mine only has the tire carrier, not the can holder version that you appear to have. The pivot is a solid billet of steel welded all the way through the rectangular tube. I have nothing like the doohickey on the bottom of your bumper, so I can't help you there. The swing arm is secured at the top with an Allen head bolt and, as you can see, has a zerk fitting for lubrication that I don't see on your bumper. My guess is that the lack of ability to lubricate the pivot could be the reason yours is locked up so tight, you can see the surface rust on the bare metal of my bumper, which arrived only 3 weeks after I ordered it. I cleaned it up before painting the bumper and I pump a little grease into the swing arm whenever I lube the other parts of the Jeep. I have pulled the arm off a few times over the years and have found no rust at all on the pivot. It shouldn't be hard to drill and tap your swing arm to accept a zerk fitting, but I don't know if the attachment method for the arm will lend itself to holding grease like mine does (o-rings on the top and bottom of the pivot bar and a lip on both ends of the swing arm tube to keep them in place).

Had to bring the sawzall out and was able to hammer the rest of the shaft out. Now its just a matter of cutting the old off and putting on a bearing style hinge.

It doesn’t look like my Dirtworx bumper or like this Dirtworx with tire carrier on their website.

After more research I no longer believe it is a DW bumper. DW does have a similar style carrier to mine but there are enough differences like the latch as shown in yours and on their gas can style are different from what I have and the DW has the shaft on the bumper and not the carrier like mine. I think the mounts are very different too, mine has some 1/2” plate with threaded holes welded to the back and the DW looks to use C-channel.

I figure I am going to be $300-400 into this bumper including finish since. My next decision is do I keep the bumper receiver and get some frame tie-ins or cut it off and stick with the frame receiver since I do tow frequently at the 2000lb limit.
