Rebuilt transmission not shifting out of first gear

It’s crazy how one accident can truly change your life. I think it was definitely a good call to leave that job and pursue something that didn’t constantly scare you.

I couldn’t imagine making 100k a year. I make about $3,000 a month gross income working about 50 hours a week. I’m satisfied with where I’m at currently but I’m a big fan of continuous improvement and a big fan of having goals and ambitions.

I’m wishing you luck becoming a game officer and with your transmission. If you need anything feel free to let me know

😎👍🏼

Look into NM also for game and fish and Forest service jobs. We lived in the White Mtns of AZ and then Catron Co NM until a few months back. Id bet they could use some people. Also If your a hunter Catron Co, 7000 sq miles, 4K people only, is one of the best BIG elk areas you can be in plus its not 120 there in summer like Phoenix is. Theres Elk, bear ,mtn lion, Turkey, deer, Ibex by white sands and some other good game. Good luck to you in your ventures in law enforcement.

I have some thoughts about all this…basically I’m not buying that a TV cable misadjustment for a short period of time burned out those clutches. Might be why they’re fixing it for free.

Prior to starting this thread, had you done any adjustment on the TV cable? I ask, because to remove the trans all you have to do is remove the return spring, loosen the hold-down bolt, and slide the bracket off the selector shaft. And when you re-install it you do the reverse; no adjustment is necessary. So if it didn’t burn out your couches before, I don’t see why it would now.

On the other hand, we already know they didn’t properly perform the kickdown band adjustment, so what else might they have forgotten? Clutch clearance, maybe?

I’ll be back with a discussion on pressure as time permits.

So I just got my Jeep back today, and yes, I agree. I told them the same thing. The transmission just slides out and slides back in without messing up any of the TV adjustments so how did that cause my clutch to burn? They tried telling me maybe it was already misadjusted beforehand and with the rebuild matching up to that miss adjustment, that could have caused it? Either way I bought a new kickdown cable they installed it and told me to pick the jeep up today. They did a test drive made some adjustments and I drove it home and seems like it’s doing great other than a little bit of early shifting which I think is because of the kick down adjustment is maybe a little tight? Which they even told me themselves they may have adjusted it a bit tight, hence, they only test drove it about 30mph but bring it “back if it is to tight” (although I think I can do this myself) It shifts right after 2k like prob 2300 I’ll have to drive it more and get back to you, I only drive it home. But it’s shifts pretty good now and drives great. I was also petal to the metal trying to get up a hill on the highway seemed a little too slow. But I’ll have to drive it more to tell. I’ll do some test and get back. They did show me the bad clutch and parts inside the transmission and they were burnt to absolute shit like all black… i barley drove it when i installed it back myself, and i even towed it to them when returning it to them so I didint mess anything up after installing the trans. So that was a little weird? @Christian.mers @hear

I will definitely look into this thank you 🙏

Sounds like a tight TV. I wouldn’t have even pulled into my garage, all of this hassle, I would’ve noticed the issue and drove right back😂

Definitely a shop error 100%. No doubt about it. Whether it was the wrong clutch clearance or even the valve body not being installed properly and there being a stuck valve. If your cable was misadjusted before then there would’ve been signs and symptoms and a rebuilt transmission doesn’t change that

It’s like the shop saying: “It’s not us, your throttle cable is the issue, look at these clutches. But we’ll fix it free of charge”
Shops do this all the time, this is their way of acknowledging that they F’d up and it wasn’t your fault but they still wanted to make it right.

Maybe this is why their the only shop within 50 miles with a 4star rating, because although they can’t/don’t acknowledge there mistakes.. they fix it for free? I called so many shops and I hated all of them. (Giving me quotes of 3500) then asking me after “what kind of transmission do you have?? Bullshit haha. This was the only shop that actually talked to me for 30 min on the phone, responding to me like they know a thing or too. And actually teaching me a few things. I know it seems like this shop has some problems but. Wouldn’t take my jeep 50 miles near any of the other shops I called lol😂 plus they fixed the mistake for free and now have 25k mile warranty or 2 year warranty 😂 @hear

That’s my guess, don’t lose that warranty paperwork!! I’m hoping for all this trouble you will get a good transmission moving forward

Make sure you understand the T's & C's of the warranty. Like do you need to bring it to them every 6 months for a fluid change to keep the warranty in place? You'll go broke doing that, lol.

No way the TV cable misadjustment burned up your clutches that fast. But it sounds like they made it right. The kickdown band being too tight shouldn't really adjust the shift point. All that adjustment does is set the resting drag of the band on the drum, which effectively sets the required servo pressure to lock down the drum. It would make the shift firmer, but not sooner. The TV cable, governor, & valve spring stiffness will affect the shift points. And I guess the line pressure screw, that you normally wouldn't touch unless you had established that the pressure was out of spec.

To take the tv cable out of the mix (to a certain extent), just shift manually and see if it performs like you'd expect. If that's fine, but shifts early when in D, it's almost certainly the TV cable adjusment still. I fought with mine for a long time after I replaced the OEM cable. But it's finally fun to drive again. :)

I should add that they basically gave you a 2nd rebuild for free. That's a costly mistake to eat. They would not have eaten it unless they knew they did you wrong (and were the slightest bit concerned you knew enough to challenge them).

Wow thanks for the info, thats good info on the rear band and what not thanks👍🏼 I just took her out for a quick cowboy camp last night. Was so tired. I just found a flat ground parked my jeep over it and just pitched my sleeping bag right underneath the jeep and kept me warm an passed right out 😂😂 woke up to a what looked like a deer Nasal bot, grub sort thing, crawling on sleeping bag, but 30 minutes driving on the highway to Prescott national forest it shifted great other than going up steep hill. It seemed like it should’ve shifted down a gear a little bit sooner than it did. Spent two hours on the trail and an hour in the morning on the trail. Then back home had no problems whatsoever. It did great. 👍🏼 @Christian.mers @hear

Yeah I was thinking that too.. I told them about this forum and how I had all of you helping me and genuinely think that switched their perspective into fixing their mistake. They are a good shop tho. I just moved from phoenix to Prescott and at least 2 of my neighbors on my street have had good things to say about them and my Nextdoor neighbor had his 1946 jeep wagon transmission done at the same shop in 98, its such a sick jeep, just invited me to his historic car shows that he goes to with his Willys buddies too, I just laughed because my jeep just because historic this year lmaoo😂
