I have a 99 Wrangler 4.0 w/ 5 speed. Jeep ran and shifted great. Had an annoying trans leak that I narrowed down to the plate at the top of the trans that holds the shifter in. I removed the console and boot and took out the 4 bolts/plate that holds the shifter in, lifted out the shifter and saw that there was no gasket. I replaced the gasket and reinstalled shifter. Now my shifter won't shift to the right of the default neutral line. In other words it won't go into 5th gear and reverse. There are two pins on either side of the hole that accepts the shifter knob under the plate I removed. The one on the right pushes in easily with light force but the left one won't budge. Did I somehow misalign the transmission or shifter. Any help you could provide would be awesome.

The "pins" on either side of the shifter are spring loaded and serve to center your shifter while it's in neutral. Are you saying they are stuck?
No They aren't. At first I thought the left one was but it wasn't. The pins are free. The part in the middle where the shifter attaches will go right but not left. Not because of the pins but something is misaligned. It's like whatever is supposed to be aligned in the trans that allows the shifter to move that way is out.
I hope I fixed it last night. After watching and reading on how the transmission works (I am transmission ignorant) I figured out that the only thing that could be stopping me from shifting over to the 5/reverse line (it was stuck and wouldn't let me go over there while in neutral) was the shift arm alignment. I rattled and jerked the shifter around like I was playing Galaga at warp speed and the shifter finally went back to the default neutral position. I got lucky. Have driven it for a couple of hours without issue.
