Short quick rattle at start up

Would a lifter ticking noise not last longer than less than 1 second? also the short rattle noise is very fast without revving, there is a very short delay at cranking with no rattle then the short fast rattle then its gone.

Could be, but it could be who knows what else. I’m not sure I would worry about anything like this personally. Just drive it until it breaks, which likely won’t even happen.
I’d say get a video or at least audio recording, I’ve not heard lifter tick that I’d ever describe that way (but it may well be).
What transmission? I recently replaced my clutch and now I wonder if a similar noise on mine disappeared.
Could be nothing more than a leaky anti-drainback check valve on your oil filter causing a dry start. Try changing your oil filter, one good choice would be Fram's Tough Guard which has a very high quality silicone anti-drainback check valve.
Or a loose heat shield could be rattling on startup. You really need to isolate which component is making the noise, then we can help narrow down the exact problem.

Its coming from under the hood sounds top end sounds like very fast rocker/lifter tap but very fast and is a very short burst.
could be dry start?
Is the timing chain tensioner hydraulic?
I always think worst case scenario lol
So ok been looking at how to vids and the 4.0 doesn't have a hydraulic chain tensioner and I have no chain slap so not that!
I changed the oil filter so its not that!
Maybe its just a Jeep noise
I dont believe (Due to oil condition and lack of correct level b4 change) that this jeep has seen regularly maintenance in a few years so am looking for general must do regular 4.0 maintenance tips so I can start.

You can check the OPDA for slop (just take the top cover off). Mine was making an intermittent noise that sounded like a lifter tick. It was slop in the shaft, the sensor wheel was almost hitting the sensor.

I thing all are correct with the lifter tick, mine does this after sitting a week or so, just very briefly, and only when I'd expect it to be dry. Most/all pushrod engines have this, but a lot are either well sound insulated, or have loud exhaust/etc to cover the sound... it's why you should never rev an engine immediately after starting. I've rarely heard an OHC engine rattle like that, unless they are out of adjustment.
I experience this but only during the winter months? In the warmer months I never have a noise at startup....not even at first start after sitting for any period of time. Only thing I can think of (in my case) is that colder temps can shrink metal where warmer temps expand metal...maybe somehow in the process I have a lifter losing oil only during cooler temps? The noise is very brief (1-2 seconds) and sounds like a few BB's being rattled in a tobacco tin.?
Fishtaco I'm reviving this old thread to find out if you alleviated your start-up tick.? Your brief start-up tick sounds exactly like mine...difference is I only hear my tick during the cooler months. My Jeep has not made one tick since last winter but noticed yesterday morning at start-up (low 60's temp) it gave a quick tick. I'm due for an oil change this week and would really like to kick this tick out of the seasonal picture...even if it means possibly using a can of snake oil!
