The "other" site

Remember? Shoot.

I'm old enough to recall when ebay was a giant yard sale, long before it became a retail con man/extortionists paradise.

It really is a shame though. Those were great forums before "they" came along.
FB pages just can't fill the hole.

The upside is that most still have archives that are great resources, even if they suck for camaraderie.
Remember? Heck. I remember when Gore invented the Internet ... [emoji12]

I guess I'm the odd duck which isn't atypical for me. I don't mind the other places and I've had my share of trouble here. There are a few I quit going to because they've turned inward and basically don't want to be much more than a private club with no new members and very little new knowledge.

This place seems unique and it will be for awhile, hopefully for a long while. But, it will go the way of the rest once it gets more popular and attracts the trolls and scum. The uniqueness is due to being fairly new, very small, and there is a level of intimacy that one senses when sitting around the campfire with a group of friends.

Hypocrisy ruins most of the other places, Frank is very familiar with one and the knowledge level stagnated there a long time ago. The place was started as a board for a sub model which is the very epitome of snobbery. They moved from JU because they wanted a specific place to talk about their limited production rig and you had to have the model to join. It didn't take long to figure out that wasn't going to work and they opened it up to everyone, but by then, the die was cast and they have never really recovered.

Most board issues would go completely away and this is true for every board if users just had the ability to police themselves. I read a lot on here, I don't reply to the vast majority because it will cause a problem, it isn't any of my business, I don't care, and the biggest one, it's your rig, build it how you like. You don't really want my opinion about your rims and if you do, you're kind of a doofus because again, it's your rig, not mine. I'm certain that stems from my odd duck mentality. I don't own Jeeps because others do, I own them because I happen to like them and just because you've managed the wherewithal to acquire one doesn't make me and you buddies. We just happen to own the same type of vehicle. You know that guy you see in the Jeep that doesn't wave back? Yep, that's me.

I don't build or own TJ's because I want to impress you. I build and own them because I enjoy doing it and your opinion of what I do matters very little to me. That doesn't sound too bad until you figure out that I feel the same way about your rig. ;)

Here's hoping this place stays small enough to enjoy and big enough to want to be a part of.

I have gravitated toward this forum because I got sick of the other, bigger, forums with teenagers who think they know stuff. I don't mind new people asking the same questions over and over again. I'll either answer the question or direct them to the answer with a link. I can and will sometimes come off as an ass because I am honest and direct. If someone asks a what-do-you-think-of-this question, I'm going to answer honestly. I'm not going to like what people do to their Jeeps as much as not all people will like what I do to mine. The important thing is to have a thick skin and take criticism if it isn't congruent to your own opinion. This is a great forum and I'm glad it exists as a resource for those of us who take pride in owning the last of the real Jeeps. :)

Glad everyone likes the forum!

Personally, I think this forum will always remain reasonably small (which is part of the reason it's been good so far). I say that because while it is the number one search result on Google when searching for "Jeep Wrangler TJ Forum", the fact of the matter is that by only catering to the Jeep Wrangler TJ, I'm isolating a lot of other Wrangler owners. One of the reason that the other forums are so large is because they're catering to ALL Jeep Wranglers, which is a huge audience. I mean crap, JK owners alone probably outnumber TJ owners by a massive amount.

If you think about all the TJ owners out there (especially the ones you are into modding them), I doubt it's anything more than 50,000 or so, if that!

So for that reason, while this forum continues to grow, I don't think we'll ever reach the level of some of the other forums that cater to all Jeep Wrangler generations. I look at this as a good thing though!

We do have our own form of snobbery around here though. Think about it for a minute. What is the standard response when someone asks about tires? Shocks? CA's? Winches? We are developing our own group-think here.

Being fairly new here, I have noticed some directional thinking, but not necessarily in a bad way. Certain stuff works well, and certain stuff doesn't. Letting someone know what works and what doesn't isn't a bad thing.

Very true. And at least we discuss other options.

I am seeing a trend though, where all TJ's in all circumstances get the same pile of parts applied. I don't think that's appropriate or useful.

There's more to the world than Currie, Warn and Goodyear.

Yes there is. I'm not a sheeple, so I tend to walk my own path. Because this is a model specific forum, you are bound to see some leanings to certain products. Hey they work well, and folks who have them want to comment on that. If I have any complaints here, the one thing I'd like to see a little less of is the trashing of certain products or companies. If said product or company didn't work for you, simply say that is didn't work well for you, not X company or Y product is shit. It may be shit, but I don't think anything productive will come of that kind of advise. If you have hard facts as to why something didn't work for you, explain why and provide examples so you can come to a fair opinion. With that said, I do like this place and appreciate all the advise given.

While I agree wholly with the sentiment expressed, give me the parameters of what you want to do with your rig and if the criteria includes high levels of durability, performance, and function, at least one of those three names will be applied to the build in some way with some Savvy tossed in somewhere.

I can make your rig work better suspension wise than any thing you've seen or driven in all likelihood and I won't do it without Currie ends.

I will also be a snob about winches for a lot of reasons but mostly because I despise Chinese copy machines and the companies that do it.

Would you like to purchase a very nice Wizard Cooling all aluminum radiator with 2 rows of 1" tubes? Less than retail, very much like new, it's shiny, and it will fit your TJ. It just didn't suit our needs.

No thanks, it won't suit my needs either, but it might be nice to know that just because it's all aluminum doesn't make it any more reliable than the factory radiator, and because it has 2 rows of 1" tubes it allows too much coolant too flow too fast thru the system which in turn won't cool any more efficiently than a factory radiator. Or maybe the Wizard Cooling all aluminum radiator with 2 rows of 1" tubes is compete shit.

You said you didn't want to know that it was complete shit and the company that sells them is about the same, you just wanted to know that it didn't suit our needs. You're kind of fickle, aren't you?

For the record, it can have 20 rows of 1" tubes and that won't let the coolant flow too much. Coolant flow is controlled by the thermostat. If there is too much cooling capacity and there always should be, the thermostat will restrict flow until a specific temperature is reached at which point it will open and let the coolant circulate until it is cooled enough for it to start restricting flow. The only reason we put in larger/more efficient radiators is for more ultimate cooling capacity for when the system needs it.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Bite your tongue! :D

There are just some things that have proven themselves to work in the real world. The good part is not everyone needs, wants, or can afford certain products. The cool part is having choices.
