Hi everybody, I'm thinking about buying this 2001 TJ SE with 175,000 miles on it. It's got manual transmission and the 2.5 L engine. I'm negotiating with private party a price between 6 and 7k. I have a hunch even 6k is too high, but I live in rural West Texas and I haven't seen too many Jeeps on the market in town, so I'm thinking I'd be willing to pay more for the convenience of not having to drive too far out. Would love y'alls feedback!

The guy I'm buying from put in a new steering stabilizer and tie rod at the mechanic, for which he says he has receipts--he told me that it had death wobble when he bought it from a dealer last year. I drove it around town and on the highway for half an hour and didn't notice anything off. The clutch and gear stick felt good. From reading the forums, I've been told to look for the 4.0 since the SE's are underpowered, but I don't really mind taking a bit to get to 70mph. I intend to mostly use it as a daily driver and some medium off-roading every month or so (my last car was a Honda Civic so what I call medium might not even be considered off-roading...). Comes with half doors and a 3rd party soft top that's got a broken zipper in the back--the current owner normally drives without the back soft top panel.

Big issues are that according to the carfax, there were 5 previous owners and there's an open manufacturer safety recall from 2002 for the ignition switch. There's a remedy available that seems pretty simple enough, but I wonder if this indicates a lack of care with which the many previous owners maintained this jeep.

Another issue is that it was reported as a total loss due to minor damage on the front and right side. I didn't notice anything weird.

Lastly, I'm going to need to replace the two back tires and spare. It's currently fitted with 31 10.5 15 tires.

Despite having many owners, it seems the car's stayed exclusively in the Dallas area before the current owner bought it in West Texas. There's some rust, but me being an absolute amateur, I've very little idea if it's surface rust or FUBAR. Random pictures attached from when I crawled around the bottom.

Of course, before I make any final purchase I'm going to do a pre-purchase inspection. But I figure before I drop the change for that, I'd love to see if there are any obvious issues y'all can identify for me, or points with which to haggle the price down.

Whether or not I buy this Jeep, I'd like to learn as much as possible about the process of buying a TJ, or any car for that matter (this is my first!). I can ask the seller for more photos if need be. Thanks!

Just did a search on CL for Dallas and there are many TJs to choose from in various price ranges.

Dallas is a 4 hour drive from me and I don't have my own car, but maybe I should beg a friend to take me out there anyway... I'm probably going to keep looking. Thank you for your input!

If anybody else has pointers on why I should pass on this particular jeep, please feel free to post here. I'd appreciate any advice as I continue my search :)

wait until further into winter, I picked up my 01' 4.0 5spd for 4k 255,000 miles (had a soft top at the time) in a small town a couple of hours outside of Dallas. the nice thing is we don't have to worry about rust as much don here (I have none) I must ask, what are you doing in west texas if you mind driving a couple of hours to go pick up a car that you will keep for YEEEARS its almost an hour into town, and we do that at least once a week for grocerys

Not seeing any significant rust on this vehicle. Anyone who thinks this is too much rust for a 20 year old Jeep is being a bit ridiculous.

That said, it's a salvage vehicle. Cut the price by half or walk away

Only go with a salvage if you are good at inspecting vehicles and can verify the damage/repairs AND you intend to keep the Jeep forever. Resale of a salvage title is going to be extremely difficult.

That being said, the seller is asking way too much. A rust free 4cyl in SoCal can be found for that price, so I have to imagine you could find many in Texas.

Just the engine and rear axle alone are enough to make we want to pass... add to that the Salvaged title. This is a 4k jeep. Keep an eye out for a nice 4.0.
When you say you'd pass because of the rear axle, do you mean because it's a Dana 35, or because it's a bad Dana 35? My understanding is that while the 44s are better, it's not really necessary unless you're getting tires bigger than 33", which I don't really intend on doing.

(or is it not even a Dana 35 and am I outing my inexperience haha)

Good to know that this level of rust isn't out of question for a jeep this old. So would this jeep be worth $3k at most?

I'm probably going to pass and wait for a nicer 4.0L, but if I can get a Jeep for 3k that won't fall apart on me or require exorbitant maintenance costs...

You should always feel inside the frame holes to confirm, or better yet bring an endoscope so you can see inside, but that frame looks perfectly fine to me, if a little dirty. Unless you are very mechanically inclined, I would avoid salvage title vehicles because you have no idea what the extent of the damage was, and resale will always be extremely difficult.

But if you want to get a truly rust-free 4.0 TJ with a clean title, get prepared to spend close to $10k.

Agree for the right price this one might be ok but only you can determine that. Hard to say what the right price is but 3 k sounds good but doubt they will sell at that. I don't see any significant rust either all surface or clay/dust from what I can tell. Still for a 4 cylinders and salvage at the asking price I would certainly pass....good luck.

Pass. The 2.5 is gutless and the salvage title is a no go for me. I had a hard enough time selling my rust free super clean 2.5L TJ in SoCal for less than they’re asking.

Yes I would pass on this one. I got my 01 4.0 with 126k for $8,000 and from the pictures it seems like its in a lot better shape than that one as well. The rust wasn't bad but the interior looked pretty nasty. The salvaged title is also a red flag.

It's definitely worth a little more money for the 6 cyl and you can find some in better condition than that. Unless you can get it for less than $3k I'd pass and save up some more for the bigger engine.

Thanks everyone for your thoughtful replies! After seeing how great this community is, I'm even more determined to make sure I get a TJ. I found another potential prospect and will be creating a new thread.
