Has anyone swapped out an oem hood for one with vents to suck out heat?

Any brands to trust or avoid?

brands to trust: none
brands to avoid: ~$600 hoods unless you like to do body work

you could just do the louvers like Genright etc. although I don't know how effective they are

Not sure either ... I wanted a more plug and play style function

Ok so now that I've added AC to the LS Swap... I'm trying to figure out how to lower my under hood temps. The hood vents seem to be the simiplest option.

How have any of you dealt with the water intrusion issue?

The subject of water intrusion has been beat to death in some of those threads linked above your post. As Nashville said it's a none issue since your engine gets wet from road spray when driving in the rain.
Motobilt sells a hood louver kit that has drip trays if it really matters to you but again the water has to drain some place.

just curious what problem you’re trying to solve. The engine compartment is hot, but it has a fan blowing and air flowing already, and the entire temp sits at 210, the normal operating temperature.

Are you seeing your engine over heat? I’m all for whatever, go for it, but I’m always curious why anyone would Mod something if it’s for looks, all good.

So before I finished the AC... things were fine (it was also 75 to 80 outside) Now with the AC and with the 95 degree days (thus the ac) engine temps will over heat if I run the ac in stop and go traffic. I have a Spal fan and it works great... but it cant handle the heat from the AC and the engine...

Thought is if I can vent the hood... I can drop temps in the compartment and stop it from over heating in stop and go traffic with the AC running

It didn't make a lick of difference to the I6 in my TJ. I think they might help vent stale heat and perhaps extend the longevity of the plastic wiring insulation and looms, but all the threads point to it having almost zero effect on the actual temperature of the engine. YMMV.

I don't have a V8.
Do you have a dedicated transmission cooler? Have you installed a separate oil cooler to try and help.

I run the Genright louvers over my 392 Hemi. No issues with water, and nothing to worry about if it gets wet (which happens even without louvers).

Can you find a link to the factory camaro spal fan that had more cfm you were discussing with someone? I can't remember the thread.

O.P. with an LS motor you might be able to control it with your ecm.otherwise a lingenfelter controller supposedly works on them

The engine generates the heat that's under the hood, not the other way around.
The vents will only help remove some of that hot air around the engine.

This is the thread you were talking about.

I had/have a V-8 in my Tj. I had a Dodge 5.2 Magnum and had a lot of underhood heat so I added vents which helped remove some of the underhood heat but it isn't a solution for an overheating issue.
Which SPAL fan do you have? Brushed or Brushless? Which size and model do you have? I'd be looking at your cooling system as being your problem.
What radiator do you have? Aluminum or Brass? Crossflow or downflow?

Engine isn't overheating when running. It's just when the AC is engaged idling... or in stop and go traffic.

It's heat soak and or not enough fan to run the ac when stopped. - goal is to allow out the heat to help the AC... not the engine.

Try hood vents if you want.its easy. Then come back here for cooling upgrades

As a fellow V-8 swapped owner I'm here to tell you that the hood vents aren't going to help. My hood would get so warm that you could hardly touch it to open it and adding the vents helped with that but they aren't going to help with your issues.

So back to asking AGAIN, what radiator do you have? Aluminum or Brass? Downflow or crossflow? Which SPAL fan do you have? Brushed or brushless?
Do you have a shroud? Pictures would help of your setup.

I had overheating issues about 2-3 years after I'd done my V-8 swap and chased it for another 2 years. I swapped in a Flowcooler water pump and then switched from a brass to aluminum radiator trying to fix it. So I've been down this road. You don't have to take our advice but it's offered anyway.

Can kinda see his setup on post #5
