Hello,
Anyone else here doing their own tuning with HP Tuners?
I have a 2006 TJ Golden Eagle Manual 6 speed with stock gearing at 3.07, a less restrictive muffler 2" lift and 31" tyres.
Just looking to improve the driveability, not chasing power gains.
So far I have changed some of the idle RPM settings for improved low speed off roading.

I've messed with mine pretty extensively, fiddled around, learned a lot. But I'm not a professional tuner by any means. I've gotten mine running on bigger injectors and map just dandy but am hiring out the tuning process for proper boost. There's not a lot to be had on an NA and otherwise stock motor imo, especially given the lack of a knock sensor and fiddling around with it yourself. I suppose the move would be to run a higher octane and advance the timing a bit, if you were so inclined.

Gears are great. I've got the 6 speed and 5.13s, just recently stepped back down to 35s. I was running boost and a piggyback on 37s before with the 5.13s. It still feels pretty spunky with the blower bypassed now, I'm excited to get some boost into it again.

People push hard for proper gearing around here, for good reason.

::edit:: I crunched some numbers. Your 4th gear turns the same rpm as my 6th gear at highway speed. That's huge. Regear and make your 4 speed a 6 speed again.

Yes, regearing is a good thing to do, but this post is about driveability improvement by programming with HP Tuners.
The 2005 and 2006 TJs have the NGC3 PCM which has a few areas that can be adjusted for improvement.
I was hoping that some other members have had some success with this that they could share.

interesting to see that 3.07 is an overseas see thing. What is your mpg? My 6 seed came with the 3:73 And was running 15.5 mpg on 30” tire..er tyre…

There is the HP tuner thread that might help?

What drivability issues do you have, and why do you think a tuner can address these?

Idle RPM too high during engine warm up,
Idle RPM too high when AC engaged,
Stall Torque Management causes sudden rpm surge when slow going if revs drop low enough. ( to be verified)
PCM programming with HP Tuners software allows changes to the parameters affecting these.

976rpm till ECT of 30c then linear decline to 650rpm at 85c, 720rpm with AC on.

I'm aware of why this is done, it does not get too cold here in winter.

That's what the factory setting was? That seems low. The issue isn't how cold it gets ambient, it's how fast the engine warms up. The longer it takes, the harder it is on the engine. A higher RPM gets the oil flowing and cylinder pressures up, which creates more heat, therefore bringing the engine temps up faster.

That's the factory idle rpm setting and there are other timed rpm adders as well at startup.
