Using front locker without the rear?

If you click them off with any differentiation whatsoever, they are not unlocking.

Not sure what you mean. It takes a second for them to unlock, but that isn't a problem since I only click the ARB's on when I am approaching an obstacle. I turn them off afterwards.

Differentiation is one tire turning faster than the other or not in a straight line. Or, one tire with more load on it than the other. I or most anyone can hold your ARB locked with finger pulling on a tire lug and not very hard at that.

Simple test that everyone should do to educate themselves. Jack up one side, spin tire to show it unlocked, lock it, turn tire until you know it is locked. Put one finger on a lug, pull a bit and while holding that small bit of pressure, have someone unlock it with the switch. Your finger won't move. I have done that demonstration countless times back at camp after listening to folks "unlock" the front ARB to turn all day long on the trail. Ya'll ain't doing shit except wearing out the switch and the compressor because that bitch ain't unlocking with all that load on it.

I understand what differentiation is and I can assure you my locker does come unlocked and my Jeep turns better. I don't think I quite understand your finger example, but I do know my lockers click off between obstacles.

They will click off but if they are still seeing resistance, they may not unlock.

I don't really understand what you are trying to say. Maybe in JV where the trail is one giant obstacle your example makes sense. But on trails like Holy Cross for example, there is an obstacle, then a dirt road, then an obstacle, then a dirt road, and so on. Are you telling me my lockers are staying engaged between obstacles? Because I can guarantee you they aren't. If the next obstacle is ten feet away, sure. But if it is a mile away then no.

I’m more confused now and I have re read it. I understand the lockers take a second to unlock so unlocking them in the middle of an obstacle does no good. But what does that have to do with unlocking them between obstacles? Your one sentence zingers such as “I expected nothing less” aren’t the most helpful towards getting your point across.

I also re-read your finger example and that makes sense. The Jeep needs to be driven in a straight line (or otherwise have have no differentiation) to unlock. That is why they take a second. So unlocking in the middle of an obstacle does no good.

If this is your qualm, that is supposed to mean that if I see I'm going to have to turn tightly on an obstacle, either one or both lockers goes off beforehand. On holy cross for example, there is a creek crossing that has (or used to have) a large boulder at the end. You need to turn very tightly around that boulder. I used both lockers on the creek crossing since there were large boulders in the creek, then I turned the front off in the space between the creek and the large boulder. I then used my sliders to pivot around the rock while the rear locker pushed me forward. I agree that if you get into a tight corner and just hit the switches, that does no good. You have to be looking up the trail.

@Darkwing327 .... not sure if already mentioned... but only using a front locker will help in tight turns.

My jeep has a front autolocker and i was able to make a sharp turn uphill.

A buddy running rear lockers in a 4door jk.. had a scary time since he had to back up a bit and 3 point turn.

Keep in mind.. this is uphill with a real dropoff cliff to one side.
 
I've run the last several seasons with the front locked full time. The rear gets unlocked only when I need to make a tight turn.

To clarify how and when a locker unlocks, it is only when the two halves are free of bind. This will require some amount of turning (or differential action). The same is true for when they will lock. The two sides of the diff need to spin at different speeds until the locking mechanism can line up. A few seconds or anything related to time is irrelevant. This is purely a mechanical action.

Outside of a front dig, there is no benefit to turning with the front locked. The point is that there is no need to unlock the front in order to turn. It is the rear locker that restricts the ability to turn. Unlocking the rear allows the vehicle to turn.

This is only true when the rear is unlocked (at least on my Jeep). I can turn much sharper with just the rear locked than with both the front and rear locked. I have never turned with the rear off and the front on, so I can't comment on that. I might rewire my switches because I'm curious now.

The switches don’t change my original point, but I will go test that original point in my parking garage later and report back. Too many people say that isn’t correct so I’m going to try again to see if I’m crazy.

Have you either not yet watched the video linked to in post in post #24 above by John Currie on this subject or if you have is he wrong too?

You have misinterpreted my point. As I said in post #55, I have no opinion on just locking the front as I am currently unable to do so. My point to JJVW above was about turning while having both axles locked versus just the rear. I believe the video you linked is about having just the front locked versus both locked. Those are two different things.

My original point at the beginning of the thread was that the OP would not likely notice the difference between having the lockers independently wired versus the way ARB recommends since mild wheeling often does not need a tight turning radius with lockers engaged. As I said, "Either way will work fine for your uses".

I've noticed in the last few discussions we've had, you seem to skew my posts towards the extreme and don't really read what I'm saying. I have not once said that turning with just the front locked would cause a wide turning radius (which is what the video you referenced denies).
