Until my oldest finally leaves for college in another year my hobby is Figure Skating Mom.
When we first moved to Michigan in '02 we signed our 2 year old daughter (our only one at the time) up for figure skating. My being a dumb redneck from Tennessee figured if she learned while young then she won't be a wall hugger liker me the rest of her life. Little did I know how much she'd love it and how good she would be at it. Unfortunately I had no clue how insanely expensive this sport is until it was too late. For the last 7 years she's competed on a national level and that means 20+ hours of ice/week year round, 4 coaches, and two new pairs of figure skates per year.
What that means for me is for the past 8 years I've been the Vice President of the Board of Directors for our figure skating club, chair two-three regional figure skating competitions each year, joint-produce a very large ice show each year, and get called around the country to announce at competitions.
After all of this I don't have any more money or time to have a hobby outside of my Jeeps. Not to sound too much like a MasterCard commercial, watching my daughter learn what it truly takes to succeed as well as watching her peers grow up over the past 15 years doing the thing they love the most makes it priceless and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
