What is this loose plug?

Here is a fun one for you. The master has primary and secondary sections. Depending on the vehicle and what bug up his ass some engineer had that day, the primary circuit can go to the front brakes, the back brakes, or one of each diagonally. That also means the primary is closest to the booster, furthest from the booster, or both.

ok, so I didn't imagine that after all. Still no idea why the JK completely failed in that scenario, but I lived to tell the tale.
 
On the frame or on the axle? Your description can be interpreted for both.

Apologies, this is the one on the frame, not the axle one. I believe it's the one right before connecting to the one to the axle shaft
That is the function of the shuttle valve. When one circuit fails, the valve shifts to the side with the leak and tries to close it off to give you some level of braking with the remaining viable circuit. It may not be good but it will be better than no brakes at all.

Hmm I'll have to take photos to get back to you. I'm guessing it's the flex line because I was able to easily bend it? It broke right at the coupler fitting

Did a transmission and transfer case service but forgot to snap a pic. However I did find online the same picture as the area in question

My breakage is the line on the right, right where the fitting and the hose is. I'm thinking it should be as simple as undoing the fitting and maybe putting a new one in? I didn't get a chance to trace it all the way to the other end of the fitting but along the length of the TJ, it seemed to be straight
 
That flexible hose is crimped to the T on the axle...and...also serves as the vent for the rear axle...that hose typically runs to the fuel filler.

Sounds like you need a new rear soft line.

Does Idaho have any potatoes left you didn't try to use for a camera?

That is the hard line busted off at the tube nut where it goes into the flex hose that runs from that junction down along the upper control arm to a Tee on the axle that is held in place with the vent bolt. From the Tee, both hard line exit and go over to each wheel cylinder.

You will need to inspect the hard line on the frame to see how far forward it goes where it is still good if at all. Otherwise, you'll need to replace it from the combination valve down to the frame and then back to that spot where it failed. Only part that changes is if you have ABS then you replace it from the ABS pump back.

Looks like I'll need to replace the hard line, from the looks of it, the last owner already tried to frankenstein the line together. I'd rather replace fresh and do it right so I don't have to worry about it later down the line.

Am I right that the only way to get the hard line is to buy an entire kit or make one myself? Haven't made one before but all the vids I researched makes it seem pretty straightforward?

it's pretty easy. The hardest part is realizing that while you CAN use a box end wrench, a line wrench is going to make for a much better time.
