Why is your 8 year old daughter on TikTok?

Yes, it’s hard enough to worry about my kids, let alone someone else’s. The world is a very bad place these days in terms of being a child.

You are making the correct albeit difficult decision. I have a 9 yo and 5 yo....I'd love to give them even more freedom but I'm afraid of what they will encounter. I learned/saw some things from neighbor kids way too early (around my 9 yo age) and it negatively impacted me for a while. There are wicked things that kids never recover from. Stay Strong!

Thanks!

No child has any business whatsoever on social media if you ask me. It robs them of their innocence and opens the door for all sorts of corruption, indoctrination, etc. We ought to just let kids be kids. Heck, I'd argue that most adults have no business on social media either. I remember growing up in the 80s and 90s. Life was better without social media in so many ways.

I've seen what children these days are up to on social media and their phones. It's astounding that any parent thinks that it is okay for their child to be on social media. It's deeply saddening to me that so many of these children are growing up like this.

You saved me the rant! So-called "Social Media" and its smartphone delivery system is the greatest evil of our day. A Goebbels wet dream.

I think the world would be far better off without social media as we know it. Chatrooms, forums, and places like Reddit and Substack I can live with. Modern social media though? No way!

This and why I run custom DNS at home.

Exactly. Forums are the spiritual successor to the old dial up BBSes - I used to run one back in the day. I never got involved with "Social Media" as I never saw the point of it and only noted the teenaged angst and DRAMA thereon - and that was BEFORE all the other ills of it came out. The last "Social Media" site I was involved with was Tribe - that was before the term was invented - and I didn't really see the point of that one either, and it too had the afore mentioned teenaged behavior.

Of course, Facebook was a thorn in my side before most people had ever heard of it, ca 2004 or so. I blocked it from linking to my website back then, a policy I continue to this day. I also have facebook, TWITter, snapcat, insta-fuck, whatever, all blocked at my firewall as well.

Talk to me. What's "custom" about it and what are the benefits?

Depends how far down the rabbit you’d like to go and what your goals are.

My specific goals are
1) block website ads/trackers
2) hard block specific trash like ticktock
3) delay the inevitable porn etc…

I used to run a raspberryPI with pi-hole
(Overview) https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/set-up-pi-hole-raspberry-pi and this device which I managed is what controlled all the outbound internet DNS traffic in my house. If my kid tried ticktock she got page not found + with curated block lists, it disabled all website adds and trackers.

However, after one too many complaints from the wife while I was traveling that the entire internet was down, I switched to https://nextdns.io/ I pay $2 a month and it provides pre-defined block lists like porn, drugs, social media, + the ability to add specific sites, it does allow for logs to be stored outside of the US or not at all. Avoiding 5eyes is an entirely different conversation and I acknowledge I do give up some privacy by paying for this VS running my own.

On my phone I run MullvadVPN, which when I’m outside the house, provides comparable add and tracker blocking.

I do pretty much the same (I think...) between firewall, hosts file, and a *very* locked down/filtered browser. I wasn't familiar with doing it via DNS, but it makes sense that it would work. I'll have to noodle on it a bit - I've been thinking about a stronger, dedicated firewall.

You’re pretty close, the downside being host files need to be loaded on each device and each browser being configured. For us, where we have smart TVs multiple IPads etc, DNS level filtering provides the same blocking on any device in my house. Which means, when a friend sleeps over, every they can’t use ticktock (unless they are manually setting up DNS bypass, which for now isn’t an issue). On the firewall side, no need for anything stronger than usually the default settings such as blocking inbound traffic like ping/telent/ssh etc…assuming you’re not self hosting a website or public server.

Bare with me while I vent here as I simply need to get this off my chest.

We moved into a nice community in Florence, Arizona on June 6th. Our daughter quickly made friends with the girl next door to us who is the same age as her, 8. We were happy about that since it's nice that she can have a friend who lives so close. However, things have started to become very problematic.

We found out that her friend next door is very addicted to TikTok. Now I honestly didn't know much about TikTok or what it was until this happened, but upon discovering it, I was absolutely shocked to go on this 8 year old girls profile and see what she was posting on there. Just the other day she uploaded a video of her doing the "WAP" dance (which I also didn't know what that was until my wife told me).

The worst part of all of this is that she's been trying to get our daughter to participate in these videos, which both my wife and I will absolutely not have. I mean let's put things into perspective here. If you're a grown adult and want to sexualize yourself online by doing the WAP dance, by all means, go for it. But an 8 year old girl? This just blows my mind.

Looking at her profile and her followers, it's very obvious to me by the amount of people following her with either obviously fake profiles (or no profile photo at all) that a lot of her "followers" could be pedophiles. We asked her about her followers and she said she doesn't know most of them, they are just random people. Even better, right? Your 8 year old daughter is online shaking her ass, wearing highly inappropriate outfits for an 8 year old, and basically just twerking so that all these creepers can see.

As a parent, how can you possibly be okay with this? See, we asked her, and she said her mom and dad both know about it, and both of them are okay with it. Really?! She's EIGHT years old. How on earth can you possibly be okay with your 8 year old daughter sexualizing and objectifying herself on a social medial platform where the entire world can see?

Now granted this is just a rant and you are entitled to parent your child however you want, I am honestly in utter disbelief that any parent could possibly be okay with this. We are very fortunate that our daughter is honest with us and knows wrong from right. I'm very, very grateful for that, because I definitely do not want out daughter participating in this sort of behavior whatsoever.

I've gone ahead and blocked the TikTok app (and all social media apps) from our WiFi router so that as long as she is on our WiFi, she won't be able to access TikTok. I'm also going to have a talk with both her and her mother about this and simply tell them both that as long as she's using TikTok around our daughter, they will not be allowed to play. If she wants to use it, she can do it in her own time and keep it to herself.

With that being said, I hope that all of the parents out there at least have some idea what their children are doing. The fact that a little 8 year old girl is doing stuff like this is both alarming and inappropriate. I'd also like to warn parents out there to be careful who you let your children play with. You just never know these days.
Thanks for listening, and sorry for the long winded rant. I'm just very highly ticked off about this whole thing. I'm not trying to completely shelter my child, but certain things are just not appropriate at this age.

EDIT: well shit i didnt see how long ago this thread started... "like a child who walks in halfway through a movie" " stfu donnie your out of your element " hope it worked out

I didn't get through the first 2 paragraphs before i wanted to vomit. TikTok is mind poison. Do you know what's on Chinese tiktok? Science fairs. Dont even get me started on China.

This disgusting bullshit is what's wrong in our country right now. My kids will get a flip phone if that, any computer they use will be a desktop in the living room.

Have a conversation with the parents. They either 1) have no idea the extent which is not what the CHILD told you, or 2) they're morons who you should cut all ties with immediately.

We can thank some forum spammer for bringing this old thread back from the dead 😆

I don’t know where I’m about to go with this, but I think it’s gonna be long 🤣

This forum is the closest thing to social media that I’ve been on. My parents made it clear when I was younger their opinions on social media, they highly discouraged me being a part of anything like that, however they said if I really wanted to, they wouldn’t stop me. I was free to do what I wanted. I decided I didn’t want to do any social media stuff, it didn’t seem interesting anyways, and along with that, I never got into video games of any sort.

I spent the majority of my time throughout middle school doing stuff outside with my brother and a couple neighbors who were my age. While many of my friends that I knew from school would be on social media and playing video games all day.

My parents gave me a flip phone in middle school since I biked to school and they wanted it for safety. I only got an iPhone 2-3 years ago when I turned 15.

Still, most of my friends spend large amounts of time on social media and stay up late playing video games. They try to get me to join them, I just have no interest. I don’t have a single close friend who doesn’t spend a lot of time on social media. I have to admit, it’s quite different and difficult trying to become friends with new people specifically who have similar interests to me because they just don’t exist nowadays.

Ever since I got my license, it’s made it so much easier for me to go and enjoy doing things by myself. Things that I can do without having to depend on friends to choose to do something active with me rather than sit at home doing nothing. I’ve found many things that I enjoy doing alone and will always try to get friends to join me, but they commonly won’t.

I’ve also realized how recently this whole social media problem has been going on. Of course, it still existed a bit longer ago, but not at this level.

For example, I’ve been rock climbing for 3 years now, and I love it. I can drive to the climbing gym now that Ive had my license, and I probably go 3 times a week for 2 hours each session. I usually end up hanging out with people 5-10 years older than me just because no one my age is there. Same thing with welding. I’ve started a welding class, and I go to the class 3 times a week, plus I usually go in the shop a bit more outside of the class. I hangout with people usually 10 years older than me.

I can seem to connect with people that age much more because they weren’t raised as much during the time when all this social media stuff has taken over kids’ and teenagers’ lives. I’m super thankful that I didn’t fall into that culture, and that I am able to enjoy many things that most people my age don’t. Heck, this forum is an example of that as well.

Obviously bad parenting can have a large affect on how much a kid or teenager might spend on social media, but ultimately, I think most will end up engaging in it anyways, regardless of what the parent wants and it will become that persons decision to stop doing it and realize how pointless and unproductive it is rather than the parents banning it. I’m basically thinking that’s it’s inevitable that a teenager at this day in age will be exposed to social media and it’s up to them to avoid that.

I was right, that was most definitely very long. And mostly pointless, but it kind of gives my experience on it as someone who grew up when social media has become such a huge thing.

Good on you! But another factor regarding your connecting with people older than you may have more to do with relative maturity level than anything else. When I was your age, most of my friends were 10,20,30 years older than me. And sometimes some younger than me as my particular age group has always been entirely too fuddy-duddy-ish to me. The same continues to this day, although I'm starting to run out of people that are too much older now - but the younger crowd aren't a bunch of fuddy-duddies (like here, most here are younger than me).

That totally makes sense. And there is most definitely a connection between social media and maturity, at least in my opinion.

Considering mostly what I hear about coming out of Social Media is teenaged angst and DRAMA, I think you're right!

First and foremost however, I just don't see the point of the whole thing - never mind all the other negatives.

Exactly, the is no point to it, as far as I can tell, and I’ve been around it my whole life, my friends always trying to include me in stuff on their accounts. I don’t see any reason to do anything. They’re just so many negative aspects to it. It’s ridiculous that so many people people actually engage in it
