Winch Questions

I have this winch. I have had no problems with it but I have only used it 7-10 times (none of which was to get unstuck!) for various purposes. I have it for security purposes on the trail mainly. I still think the Warn M8000 is a great winch and would have gotten the synthetic version if I had saved the $850. But for $471 I was able to swing the synthetic Superwinch and get on the trail...

I'm waiting for a WARN sale or rebate offer. I would like a synthetic line M8000, but I will convert a steel line to a synthetic line if I can get the winch at the right price. It's a math thing.

I happen to have a slightly used 100' 3/8" synthetic winch line I'm no longer using that even has the Safety Thimble on it. I was given a new rope before this one got very used so it's still in good condition. Half off, $150.

Yes, that's what I use.

The solenoid (or control pack as you called it) can indeed be mounted under the hood. Mine is mounted under my hood. I think it looks much cleaner that way!

Can I ask what the height is without the solenoid? Cause I just measured my brush guard center area and basically I have 23" of width (which should be plenty), and just a touch under 8" of height...so i'm very curious to know what the height is on yours.

There is one thing that always concerns me when somebody moves their control pack to under the hood. That is if they are using an adequate gauge of cable and if the connectors are the correct type and properly crimped onto the cables. Winches can easily draw over 400 amperes under load so that particular job really has to be done correctly.

I will be very sure to do so, i'm pretty good with wiring and know not to skimp out or go cheap. I always go the extra mile with wiring, its usually one of those things I do not want to fail or short out as it will always be a total PITA and almost always happen when your in a bad spot, lol.

Plus i'm sure at the time I may post a thread so everyone can ask Q's or chime in on good ideas, and its here for reference in the future as well.

7.6" is the height. So you'll be good!

For nearly the same price you can get the m8000s.Thats the winch I am going with as it has a lifetime warranty and a proven track record. Also looks the exact same

Also I am buying the warn m8000 with steel cable but I'll be installing the TRE safety line and thimble.

It's a fine winch, full disclosure I have the same one.

A Google search will get you real world reviews rather than people saying don't buy it because it's made in China (which is not correct). It also has the same lifetime warranty.
