Jeep Won't Start (No Clicks)

Well I finally got it. No clue what I did though. After trying to jump starter I noticed the gauges inside were working and I was able to check for diagnostic codes (there were not any). Went back to room thinking I was so close but still not there. Then remembered I forgot to slide the black wire back on starter. Went and did that and she fired right up. Starter sounds a lil weird but probably just cuz I got the cheapest one AutoZone had in stock. I'm thinking when I put the new starter in I probably just had the push clip in the "pretty much on there but just not quite" zone so it looked and felt fine but did not work. Thank you all for the help and advice. No heart attack quite like car trouble a couple days into new job.
If you are talking about the starter-signal wire, you can try crimping the terminal connector on tighter or replace it with a terminal that will fit tighter.

I am not too concerned. Gonna replace starter in a couple months with probably a mean green. Just glad it can get me to work and back

Remove and clean inspect your cable/terminals. Odd it started working after a jump start.

Looks like it was false hope. Went to leave work and it died 3 times while driving in about 3 miles. Getting it towed to dealership right now. Will update yall with what they say is wrong.

Wait

Wait, it died while driving?

Have them verify if the Crank Position Sensor wire is near or touching the exhaust manifold (apparently, the heat will shut your jeep down when it gets hot).

This happened to me after a shop changed a cracked manifold on my 99 right after I purchased it. I didn't make it more than a mile down the road when I left the shop. I was told the CPS wire was melted by the exhaust due to them improperly routing things. I didn't have my eyes/hands on it so I can only share what I was told. Throwing it out there in case it's helpful.

I’d start with the battery and the battery terminals.
I had a similar problem, and it turned out to be a bad terminal. I couldn’t get it tight enough, and it was moving around on the the post causing it to lose connection randomly.

Replaced the terminal and it fixed the issue.

He said he checked this already, but it’s definitely a good recommendation that he re-confirm (especially when we don’t know how or how well the terminals are attached).

Ended up driving it home on a very sketchy drive after waiting 2.5 hrs for tow truck that never came. Have appointment with dealership on Monday so gives me weekend to keep working on it. I will check the CPS wiring and recheck the terminals. Doesn't hurt and worth it trying to avoid a dealership invoice.

Get a voltage meter. Put it on the battery posts and read voltage while trying to start. The repeat the test with the leads on the terminals. If the voltage is different then you know the terminal connection is the issue. A bad ground connection can cause a lot of weird stuff.

Id take it to an auto parts store and have them hook up their tester for your starter/battery/alternator.

You can shake/wiggle your terminal wires while they test it to see if you can duplicate driving conditions.

Dealer finally found problem. Bad 5V reference tire speed sensor. Thought this was good news as it seemed like a cheap and easy fix but looking like I am in for about 1000. Took them 3 hrs of diagnostics. At least its getting solved and I get her back though.

Didn’t know you had ABS.

With that said, I’ve never known a wheel speed sensor to cause a no start problem. I could be wrong but I don’t believe them.

I dont have ABS. 06 Rubicon. Sorry if I didnt specify. They said since its wired into same circuit as ASD the bad sensor triggers the ASD. They pulling one on me or this make sense to anyone?

Are you taking it to Landers McClarty? Many folks in the local Rocket City Wranglers have been hosed by them... it was recommended to me to not use them, so I go up to Fayetteville, TN for work/service on my Jeeps...

Ya I took it to them. Wish I woulda known. But about 15 miles south easy so cost me 60 just to get it towed there. Idk if it would be any cheaper to take it to TN when you factor in cost of towing. Also, you have any recommendations for Jeep shops out here? Looked like Outlaw in Athens had good reviews but wasnt sure.

Now starting to doubt they are working on right thing. Looked into it a little and it seems that the wheel speed sensors are only for ABS (can someone confirm?). My Rubicon does not have ABS. Hoping they just misspoke and meant transmission speed sensor instead of tire speed sensor. Going to give em a call tomorrow since they closed.

I’d confirm that.

Outlaw is ok, I go to Slaters Automotive in Brownsboro, Dug Hill road, just north of Hwy 72… it’s about 5 minutes east of Huntsville.

@AndyG may have some recommendation as well.

If you are on FB, join the Rocket City Wranglers, Wheeling and Waffles, and NAJC pages… there are a bunch of great Jeeper here!

If you’ll take it to Coles’ auto repair on North Parkway ib Huntsville or call him to come get it he’ll fix it-

Don’t rule out advice from @Wranglerfix - if it is an 04-
06 he has a lot electrical knowledge with those-

Be careful that you don’t help them potentially change their story (and their paperwork) regarding the work that they did in case they are lying.

Rather than tell them that you don’t have abs so they must have not meant to say WSS, just ask them if they can tell you what they did and then ask for a copy.

You might want a copy regardless if you paid with a card so you can call your bank and provide that info to do a chargeback if the dealer indeed lied and won’t refund your money.

Summary: Try not not to set off their alarm bells until you get the info you need. And like you said, maybe they did misspeak (but don’t lead them down that path, let them give you an un-influenced explanation of what they did to fix it).

Edit: additionally, keep in mind that you have the Jeep so you can check to see if the speed sensors on your drivetrain look old or new. If they look old then you know they didn’t change them.
