Let's talk towing

I was close to pulling the trigger on a duramax swapped Suburban once. I ended up keeping the Yukon Denali for the wife and got an LML as a spare/travel/towing only vehicle. Still kind of dream of a duramax Suburban....

Yes, I have towed relatively light with the Yukon XL (6.2, 6L80) on a multi hour trip. It wasn't the most fun. I couldn't imagine towing 6-7,000lbs across multiple states with it. It does fine for short trips.

I put a shell on my 4 door duramax when i want to scratch that itch, lol.

I'm afraid to weigh mine. All that 1/4" steel goes to a girls waistline

In the old configuration mine tip the scales @ 5K lbs.

You still have that truck? Any issues with the injectors?

Yep still have it.Thankfully never any issues.balance rates were just getting borderline when I replaced them at 180k with the latest brand new bosch versions.did a new cp3,porting,turbo and some other stuff during the tear down for head studs.

TJ and Duramax... one has to go. Which one would it be?

Not a bad idea. I picked up a used hard tonneau cover for $75, it is nice for travel.

Nice. No issues with my 2013 except the DEF system a few times. So, I deleted it with a mild tune.

I had the same on my 2014, did the same. It actually did it on my way home from buying it.... I had to travel south to get away from rust, and ended up with a $1200 tow bill to get it the rest of the way home

Did it send you into limp mode? I can't say that mine runs any better/stronger with the delete. I do know that I don't have to deal with DEF anymore.

It sends it into a certain amount of miles until a certain top speed. First was 65mph, the 55mph, then it starts dropping off fast after that. I definitely have a little more power. Lot of scares with these trucks though, broken cranks, blown head gaskets, losing TCM's, grenading CP4's.
Pull the duramax drivetrain and put it in my 70 k20. I'm tempted to do it now and then but I'd loose a lot of towing capacity and comfort.
Has to be some donors around. I almost pulled the trigger on a LLY rolling chassis with motor, trans, etc and so happened to be a rust free 2wd 2500 suburban for sale at the same time. Was very tempting. I had the perfect donor LLY, loved that truck but too rusty. Had 112k miles and paid $3600 for it. Someone wanted it for $6500 so it had to go.

can it be added for a reasonable price? Not guessing but research what it is and add it?

until you load the jeep with everything for a trip, put it on said trailer, and then load down the suv with family, snacks, cooler, etc and put it on a scale you really don't know what numbers you are working with.i am doubtful you have a 3,300lb jeep.

You're considering a borderline capacity suv and being very optimistic about weights. That would disqualify it for me immediately.especially when you say kids could be involved.

For the trips I would tow it on, never more than 1 kid. And I don't load down my vehicle like a lot of y'all seem to do. My goal isn't to be able to rebuild the homestead on the trail. When we take our trips, one guy has a cooler in his rig and we all share that. We save a ton of money on ice that way too, so we have more budget to eat out at night. :) As far as flat towing, we've recently had a run of breakdowns that don't allow for a flat tow back home. Plus I don't love the wear on the tires, although that isn't probably quite as big a deal as it seems. And for the weight of my TJ, I definitely need to weigh it to know for sure, but I've accounted for everything I've done to it, and didn't factor in removing the doors & top. And I went worst case scenario on the trailer weight; the uhaul is 2200, but the other rental place has one weighing 1700.

Because I believe this thread was looking to approve a purchase that was already well underway rather than take any useful advice.

Patently false, but feel free to run with your own personally crafted narrative.

Asks about vehicle, collectively everyone says no, buys anyway. Ok 🧐

You won't, but you're free to re-read the thread. That's not exactly what happened.

Reread, what year, model, engine, packages did you end up with? Very likely you will be over capacity based on previous posters/quick google search of that model in similar era you were talking.

I don't have the tow package on the wife's expedition, but it seems like the primary difference between ours and the 9k lb rated tow package is the gear ratio in the rear end. So I guess just regear that thing and we're good to go, right? ;)

This search has evolved into shopping for Lexus GX 460, because apparently I am far too bougie to not have cooled seats. Whatever, I'll own that without apology. Plus I just haven't found any Sequoias in the condition I want for the price I want to pay. The Tow capacity is stated as 6500, GVWR is 6600. Curb weight is ~5150. Seems like I should be good, right? Obviously brakes & proper hitch notwithstanding. If the trailer & jeep weighs 5700, I should have ~1400 leftover for people/cargo & tongue weight. So not quite 10% under the max towing value.

Assuming Im understanding this.

Go with the Lexus GX470, instead of the 460... you get same towing capacity, and a transfer case that can be selected low or high range with a shift lever. There are lift kits, bumpers, etc for offroad conversions of the 470... The lexus is often much less money than the equivalent toyota as well.

EDIT: didn't see you bought already... oh, well...

You will be miserable using a uhaul trailer for any sort of distance. 1st off they don’t have electric brakes, they use surge brakes. There is no adjustments or anything you can do to help compensate for being on the edge of the vehicles towing limits. 2nd there is no way to adjust the positioning of your jeep to get proper tongue weight, the jeep will ride all the way forward and put way more tongue weight on your rig then ideal.

Not sure what other company you are talking about renting from, but I would recommend a heavy equipment rental place, as they typically have flat deck trailers that would have electric brakes on both axles and allow you to adjust tongue weight as needed for your vehicle.
