What does TJ stand for?

Like LJ wasn't ever official just a nick name
I have LJ on a data plate in my tub?

I removed this plate from the area around the drivers seat when I painted the interior just didn't get around to replacing it.

It isn't a model designator or even a sub model designator. Go to the dealer and dig through the model designations in their parts menu and you won't find any reference to a LJ model anywhere. Every single Jeep TJ variant starts with TJ in the menu.

It is my understanding that in Canada Jeep is not able to sell under the Wrangler name due to legal issues and it's is known as TJ there.
You are correct and that would seem to also apply to the YJ since it was a Wrangler as well. There is similar in Australia. The Sahara model is used by another brand so all TJ Sahara models are Renegade.

GM licensed the name "Wrangler" back in the '70's or '80's for the Canadian market. Many pickups were badged on the fenders and hood ornament with the name. It's pretty common in the worldwide auto market to use different names for the same vehicle in other countries.
