Gas tank overflow

It's a crappy design, and shouldn't be an issue, but how many recalls, and tech bulletins do you think are out there floating around for stupid shit like this? A lot! There is a true fix, and it has been pointed out. How many times do you run across a flawed design that has a true fix? Not many. Band aids are fine, as long as you hold site on a true fix, if there is one, and there is one in this instance folks. Anything beyond that is just fodder to argue and provide entertainment for argument.

It is my understanding that initially it wasn't really a design flaw.
The OEM float functioned properly until exposed to higher concentrations of ethenol which caused the tabs on the float to swell.
Nonetheless....the majority quit working.

The silence is not from a lack of interest but more from not wanting to be on the receiving end of a mrblaine "I have to be right" attack.
Now you're showing your ass!
Alright, then I will ask you. Do you fix DW with a steering stabilizer?

OK. I made a good faith effort to find an answer to this before I posted. I searched the forums and then started at the end of the General Forum working backwards, but after three pages all I had done was read a bunch of really interesting discussions.
I talked to Mitchell at JcrOffroad the other day and mentioned that this is my first TJ and how do I get the gas pump to shut off before gasoline starts spewing out of the filler neck. He laughed and asked me what year my TJ is. I say “2005 Unlimited” and he says “known issue.” That’s all I got. Is there a fix for this and if not, what do you guys do to keep this from happening? I am so used to filling the tank completely that I will have to retrain myself. So ????
I found that when I pull up to the pump and the Jeep tilts to the right, it spews out even when the nozzle is set at the slowest setting, however, when I pull up to the pump and it is tilted slightly to the left, it doesn't , the gas station I use most often has a fairly good pitch to the pad so I always try to use the side of the pump where the filler spout is on the down hill side. I know it makes no sense, but it seems to work for my 2005 Wrangler.

The design flaw part is something I've pondered a fair bit. They could have done it differently in a manner that would greatly reduce the chances of it failing but the costs would be much higher. I also suspect that no one had any way to predict the various additives that would wind up in fuel. I work on a lot of TJ Unlimited models (I have 3 here now) and about 10% have had the problem so I don't know what the attrition rate actually is. There again though, parts of the country have a rusty frame issue that a lot of us are not well versed in because we never see them.

C'mon, we all know this is how you fix it!:p
double stabalizer.webp

After i got my TJ ( i'm its 2nd owner..) i called the dealer about the recall and they just laughed at me. So i put a rag around the pump nozzle to catch anything, and do it carefully as it gets full.

A quick review of your posts shows you continually ask questions when you already know the answer just so you can then ramble on in an attempt to show off your knowledge then if any one disagrees the bullying begins.
My question to you is, Why do you bully people? We all are on this site to enjoy our selves and in the process learn a little. Please stop with the harassing ass clown attitude!

You have self control, exercise it.

And yes, I did ask that question that I know the answer to because I know they also know the same answer and their lack of acknowledgement to that answer is why this keeps going. Fix the problem or don't but stop insisting that a band-aid is the solution.

Positively, that's a fix-all cure-all and has many applications.
Fixes are as follows:
1. The dreaded death wobble
2. Bump steer
3. No need to balance tires
4. You can now safely run 37's
5. No need for toe-in adjustment
6. Some even report that dual stabilizer's fixes fuel splash back on 05-06 models.

Upon further reflection, I begin to understand a bit why folks are offended by what they perceive as "bullying". It has to do with my particular aversion to information that gets passed off as correct that isn't and I've been around a lot of it.

As most know, I'm fairly astute when it comes to brakes and braking systems. About 15 years ago on Jeeps Unlimited, this guy had the bright idea of tossing a Dodge 2500 master cylinder on his TJ. He did a nice write-up on it and everything along with his review of his "brilliant" mod. He said it now has sports car brakes and it worked awesome. I did some quick research and discovered that the bore size is 1.25" which is 50% larger than the stock bore size and no, you don't get sports car brakes, what you get is a high hard pedal and a 50% reduction in line pressure to the calipers.

I explained as much and he kept insisting they worked better than ever. I finally went and bought the same master, modified it, installed it in a TJ, had several folks drive it so I wouldn't be the only one reporting the poor, much poorer performance and then used my pressure gauge to show that the math was in fact correct, the pressure was reduced by the increase in bore size and the only thing accomplished was a high hard pedal and poor braking.

Didn't matter, he still insisted. Several years later when I developed the Vanco kits, he hopped into the thread about them finally admitting that his brakes sucked and he needed to fix them. The problem is to this very day I still have to tell folks over and over that a larger bore master is not an "upgrade" and that little nugget of info out there being passed off as fact due to that moron is not fact and does the exact opposite of what you intend because it makes it worse. I have spent hours and hours of time and effort combating that bit of erroneous information and it still wastes my time all these years later.

I have several more examples of similar but what they have done (those types of info that are not wholly correct) is taught me that when faced with them, you beat them into submission, you do it every time and you keep doing it until the truth is where it belongs and the fallacy is where it belongs. I despise bad info with a passion because it does no one any good and that part of this isn't going to change.

So the story I found online was; DC was made aware of the problem but refused to initiate a recall, insisting that the splash back was simply "internet lore." Interestingly, DC reportedly did later change the design slightly as well as the composition of the plastic used.
I did find some people that were able to get dealerships to swap out the tank. Technically the tank is a one piece sealed unit and not repairable in any way. Other folks were told to pound sand. Another interesting (bullshit) thing I found was DC significantly raised the prices of the tank; something like 350.00 to 1300.00. Whether or not related to the splash back issue coming to light, only DC would know.

Be careful using a rag to catch fuel. Depending on what state or jurisdiction you live and fuel up in, there may be specific regulations on disposal of that rag. You may not personally be responsible for it but the station may be. Here in CA, the station is responsible for fuel clean up. Keep costing them money and they will not sell fuel to you. Again that is in CA where they are crazy strict on environmental stuff.

"there are many paths you can go down, I can only tell you the ones I've used and how they worked out"

mrblaine: I value your opinion and insights. You've "been down the path" no need for me to "blaze a different trail" when it comes to many of these KNOWN issues.
Keep on keeping on!

Might have used the wrong term, its not a box of cloth rags i take with me, its those paper things they provide with the window wash ..

When I bought my 06 TJ X 3 years ago, I took it back to the dealer in Boulder.

They said there was no recall by the manufacturer, but the dealerships were authorized to repair under the vehicle warranty.

Since I was well beyond, I was SOL.
I hit them with “so you sold me a Jeep knowing it had a safety hazard ?” That got them to think liability, they offered a used tank, and I refused, because the problem would just return.

They said that’s all that could be done because the tanks aren’t made anymore and there were no after market tanks available.

I gave him a printed sheet of the Genright extended range tank. After some bickering, they worked with Chrysler, and the new tank was covered by my extended warranty that I had purchased at the time of the sale.

Granted, not everyone has a valid extended warranty now, but those of you who do, for me, it was worth the time and effort. 24.5 gallons, no splash, and I didn’t have to get dirty. Plus I have a neat looking custom made aluminum tank and heavy duty wrap around skid/protection. :)

I have the same tank under my 04 TJ. When your low fuel dash light turns on, how much fuel do you have remaining? My guess is I have 5 gallons left. Thanks
