Nashville TJ's Build - Continued

OK - added 1 thou to go shallower: 50 thou shim and 4.5 thou backlash:

I don't think I can get any better on the coast side:

And comparing the drive sides of the 49 7 and the 50 4.5 - it looks like the pattern is just a bit more centered heal to toe on the 50, but still appropriately on the deep side as I'm trying to achieve.

Mikey? ( @hosejockey61 )

Sorry for the delay, getting my ass kicked at work today. I agree, I think you are there. Let us know what Ben thinks as I'm curious.

I got to thinking after looking at the photos on my desktop. This is just a thought, but we never actually found the best pattern possible for a gear setup. What I mean is, take away your desire to have it slightly deep and find what would be a perfect pattern on any other gear set. Only then would we be able to quantify how much deeper we need it. How deep is "slightly" for according to Ben? Does he want 3 thou deep? 5 thou deep? 10 thou deep? What is the number he is looking for? Even if we had it, we wouldn't be able to accurately add it in without first finding the best pattern this gear set has to offer. Make sense?

You bracketed early on, but didn't continue to bracket to dial in to the middle. We just can in from the deep side and said it looks good (which it does). But how far away is shallow from where you are right now? 🤷

Just food for thought while I was staring at the pics...

I did run quite a few more patterns, but did not post them all. Concentrating on the drive side, here are a few more from deepest to shallowest in sequence:

Starting way deep: This was prior to adding the pinion shim, but no carrier shims at all. This is when I thought I needed to be somewhere between 0 and 10 thou, but could not get there as my smallest shim is the 10.

The first pattern after adding the pinion shim. Still way deep:

3 thou less deep:

The next 3 were posted earlier, but the next in the series getting incrementally more shallow:

And finally, from the pre-pinion shim setup, so not apples to oranges, but I think this was 2 or 3 thou (an educated guess) more shallow than the 50:

And crazy shallow:

And just for kicks, crazy crazy shallow:

Looking at it - somewhere along the line I crossed the perfect depth, but perhaps the jump between the 50-4.5 and the 10-5 (between which I added the pinion shim) was greater than the 2-3 thou I am estimating. Do you think that perfect pattern is between those two? I can easily go up from the 50 to see what happens as the pattern approaches the 10-5.

Maybe that is worth the effort. What do you think?

Ben did not specify specific how much deeper, just to be on the deeper side of a good pattern. I emailed him several patterns over the weekend, and I hope to speak with him this week. I'll see if he can be a bit more specific, but I'm hoping he will be able to pick a good pattern.

OK - I just ran 52 at 7.5.

This looks really, really close to the 10-5 pattern just before adding the pinion shim.

For reference:

So I think I've now aligned the patterns pre-pinion shim and post pinion shim. 10 before = 52 after. So the impact of the pinion shim was actually 52 thou.

And I think this is back to being just a tad shallow. I'll go do a 51 and see what happens.

Edit: Actually, looking closer side be side on the big screen, it looks like the 10.5 is a bit more shallow than the 52.

Edit: Looking again, the 52 looks pretty good. What do you think, Mike?

I'm thinking the perfect pattern is either the 51 or the 52, but I'm leaning toward the 51.

What say you all?

That's what we need to see, Jeff. Way to put in the extra effort to make sure it's good. I personally like the 52, but it's only a 1 thou difference so I'm good with it. I would send the one you like best between the 51 and 52 to Ben and see how much deeper he thinks it should be and adjust accordingly.

Looks like you'll be ready for Sand Hollow after all! 😁

Isn't he involved in a lot of race car gearsets? It is KoH week, so you might have trouble getting ahold of him, Jeff.

I also sent Ben the 51 and 52 I did this morning. It will be interesting to hear his take, and I'll certainly report back.

I like the 52, but I’m a newbie. I’ve just watched and played the game in my head since Rob was here doing it. It looks like you’re getting more contact with the 52.

Between the 51 and 52 I don't know that I would be able to say if one looks better than the other, but to me the 51 the drive side definitely looks more centered between toe and heel.... at least that's what my untrained eye is seeing. I don't know if this will help or not but here's the 2 side by side

I'm thinking 51 is more what Jeff has said he wants.
