Rather than use a skid steer, why not put the Jeep on jack stands, remove the coils and bump stop jounces, then use a floor jack to move the axle through it's entire range of motion? Doing this if the busy way to recreate dynamic loads in ways that flexing with a fork lift cannot do and allow you to better set the bump stops to where they need to be.
@jjvw, That is a great question. I recognize that there are a few ways to do it, and I’m not married to one particular way.
Having said that, I usually set bump one of two different ways. The first, is without shocks (or coils as you said), with wheels/tires on, in order to achieve stuff and determine the measurement I’ll need for bump.
This time, I worked with Jeremy from Rock Krawler on a few specs, and landed on 12.1” shock travel +/- 0.5-0.75” of travel. I went with (4) 12.1” Fox Remote Reservoir Front Shocks for a JK (stem mount both F & R).
Since I knew which shock I was married to (instead of determining shock length after cycling without shocks, I decided to install the shocks and coils, and use the skid steer, since both the shocks and coils were fixed components of my equation.
An additional benefit is I always establish rear bump first, which I did when I posted this. This provides an opportunity to set rear tire stuff, and for me (more importantly) a pivot point for the suspension to compress against in the rear, so the the remainder of the articulation comes from the front. So I used the skid-steer, cranked her up carefully with adjustable bump stops in the rear, got close to tire stuff, locked them in, and remeasured remaining stuff up front. Once the body pivoted off the rear compressed/bumped side, the front axle continued to articulate up until I reached stuff. I backed off about 0.75”, then measured between the top bump stop and the bottom coil plate. This was my additional bump needed.
Hope my explanation helps. Again, I’m not married to my way, as I continue to tinker and evaluate new ways of doing things. I just felt this was best since the shocks had been decided. Now if I didn’t have shocks, or was going to truly tailor those to the uncompressed articulation, I may have taken a different approach.
