Savvy mid-arm vs GenRight mid-arm?

Where does anyone who knows WTF they're talking about say Savvy's mid-arm kit was only designed for racing? I know its designer, he invited me to drive the prototype, and neither then nor in any of the many discussions on the mid-arm by knowledgeable types has anyone claimed or inferred it was primarily designed as a race suspension. What I noticed while I was driving it was its unreal smooth street and trail ride, great street handling, and its ability to go tearing around offroad and climb uneven terrain like the proverbial bat out of Hell.

To repeat claims that Savvy's mid-arm is only good for racing is like claiming a Fender Stratocaster guitar is only good for country western music.

Dave had suggested it. I want to extend the wheelbase in the rear now that I have the GenRight stretch tank. My rear axle can go back about 2-3" now to be centered in the wheel well. In the process of doing so however, my upper control arms are almost out of length (which is due to the pinion angle being rotated so far up because of the tummy tuck).

Dave had mentioned he could extend my upper rear arms with some DOM tubing he builds, but he said if I'm going to go through the effort of all this and outboarding the rear shocks, why not just put a mid-arm lift on? I've heard plenty of good things about them as well.

The Savvy kit is not designed to be stretched like that. It'll put the geometry out of wack.

Are you sure you have the room to stretch even at full bump? You might want to also look more into the benefits of stretching 3". I don't think it's going to be enough to make a positive effect and it'll be the most expensive 3". Ideally you want to hit 7-8" of stretch for 35s on a TJ.

LOL! After the suspension mess I had to correct from my upgrades in April I said I was done too. Then I re-opened the can of worms tummy tucking. One day I'd like to just get a Jeep and not mess with it, but I dont think I am built that way. Love the work you've done on yours, it certainly does inspire us to read up and plan other upgrades. If Oregon wasn't so far away id be all over the gas tank skid.

I'll have to ask Dave to do what he thinks is best, since he would be doing the install for me (I don't know how to weld).

My thought is that since my rear wheels are 2-3" more forward in the rear wheel wells, I could push the axle back a bit, so that's what I'm referring to as the 2-3" stretch. Of course I am only just guessing. Once the rear shocks are outboarded and the mid-arm is installed, I have no idea where that rear axle will end up.

I'm going to leave it up to the expert, as he does this for a living. Maybe I won't gain any stretch at all.

Yep, that tummy tuck opened up a completely different can of worms. It changes things substantially, that's for sure. But, I'm happy with it. I can't stand that shovel skid plate that's on there from the factory, it gets caught on anything and everything.

I told myself I wasn't going to mess with this Jeep that much when I bought it, but I couldn't have been more wrong.

Someone actually came and picked up that Rokmen skid plate and fuel tank the other day!
 
You're insane...

With that out of the way, the reason your wheels look like they are forward in the wheelwells is because of the short arm. If you cycle your suspension...You'll see that the bump stop cups will probably come together pretty close to where they should (nice and centered). The lower cup will be rotated, due to your extreme pinion angle, but it should line up.

If you install a longer arm, the effect on wheelbase will be minimized...Its one of the reasons the myth perpetuates around the interwebs about long arm kits riding better. The longer the arm, the closer to parallel it will be to the ground, all else equal. The closer the arm is to parallel, it has a greater leverage on the spring and that should translate to a smoother ride (I really need to draw my free body diagram for the long arm vs short arm NVH thread).

Additionally, if the rear turns out anything like mine did after the outboard with bump stop reduced to something other than the compressed shock, moving the axle back will require enlarging the wheel opening to make room for the 35s. When I eventually make the switch from 33s to 35s, I will need to cut and move some sheet metal. An actual stretch would be far more invasive.

Ask yourself what you specifically intend to accomplish with a change in arm length. Then make sure you know how a change in arm length would actually accomplish this.

What I have is just fine for what I do.
Maybe need to start on a new rig. I have 2 to do but really dont know what I want to do.

Does the EMC build utilize the factory spring mounts and factory locations for suspension setup?

Yup. The frame must remain stock. Even repaired frames can be controversial. So no outboarding.

The first year that car ran it got not only a win for it's class, it got the best time placed in every class. It goes to show that a lot can be done to a Jeep without cutting it all apart. John Currie was also driving that year so I'm sure that also had something to do with it.
