Before I regeared, off road that wasn't just gravel or simple dirt was almost always 4L. Since then I am able to use 2H/4H far more often in rougher areas, which is very nice.

I used to go off roading as often as possible in my CJ. 90% of the time I was in 4 low as it was much easier to control that thing on the rough trails and whatnot at the slower speeds.

So far I've only been off road once in my TJ. I put it in low range which seemed to cause a lot of random quick shifting of the automatic transmission. I'll get back off road eventually where I'll experiment with downshifting the automatic while in both low and high range.

I have never played with being in 4lo in anything other then first. Next time I go out I'll shift through the gears.

It's really great. Keeps the engine RPMs low but still has great torque.

I dont use first 4lo for anything other than crawling obstacles.

I'll run through all the gears in 4L if I need to. I think my top speed is barely 20mph at 3k rpm, though...

If I stayed in 1st/4L, I'd still be out there somewhere!

I stay out of 5th when I'm in 4low (seems smart for some reason). But I go through all the other gears. I couldn't imagine only staying in 1st in 4low. Would take years to get anywhere.

When I'm in 4Lo, I'm in 1st 99% of the time but if it's easy enough to have to use 2nd for more than 10-20' I shift to 2wd. I don't have any trails I can't do in 2wd that I'd bother using 4Hi for. I would use 4Hi briefly to get through a long deep patch of sand or mud but that's it.

I’m 95% 4LO. Having the 5 spd makes tracking obstacles much easier because of how grabby the clutch is in LO. Almost like an auto!!!!!
