Upside Down Rancho RS5000X Shocks?

While installing my Ranchos this last week I noticed how tight the clearance is between the rear axle and the “can” portion. I’ve read around a few times that you can mount them “upside down” but wanted to try to confirm that.

Here’s the reply from Rancho:

The red boot MUST be up or the shock will not function.

While I’m sure it will still have some affect, it’s discouraged by them somewhat formally. Note, I specifically asked about the 5000x - I can’t speak to whether this applies to the 9000 series or others that may use a different chambering.

I've cycled the suspension to check the bumps and it's so far staying clear - once I swap out the OEM trackbar + bracket for an adjustable I'll do it again to validate.

An angle grinder and some channel locks and you'll have clearance.

I blew out my 5000X's when I ran them upside down almost immediately. I know others have had no issues, but that was my experience. Worse part was that the shocks only had 800 miles on them.

Rancho is consistent on their advice not to run the RS5000x upside down. I asked them the same question several years ago when I was running that shock.
