NM takes a giant step backwards

Our lovely Land of Enchantment has been going backwards financially for years, and now is trying to pull themselves out of the deficit hole any way they can come up with. Latest is the legislature just voted to start charging sales tax on Amazon purchases. I guess I'll be looking for another source for a lot of things other than Amazon...

I believe it's a lot of states that are trying to do this.

Hell, why not just make pot legal in every state, then they can collect the massive taxes from that? In Oregon they made it legal not to long ago, and I read the amount of taxes they collected from it in one year were in the hundreds of millions!

Not only do I buy personal items from Amazon, I've placed over 300 orders through them since the beginning of 2015 in my job as buyer where I work. Now the state of NM is going to want a cut of that action. Problem is, they don't spend what they do collect very wisely, and I don't see that changing just because they are going to have a new source of revenue.

I've been saying it for a long time, the U.S. is not headed in the right direction, and hasn't been for a while.

We're reaching the point that Ancient Rome did, with the over taxation of everything. People don't mind paying some taxes, but when they start trying to tax you for everything, it becomes an issue.

All states will be collecting on line sales tax at some point. But I agree with @Chris, we have become like Rome. And we are on the decline. dont get me wrong, the ol' US of A is still the greatest country in the world to live in but we aren't as great as we think we are.

For consumers that order tax-free items online, but live in states that charge a sales tax, they are technically required to report that purchase to their state tax agency and pay the sales tax directly to the agency. When consumers are required to do so, it is often called a "use" tax.

I've never paid sales tax on anything mail ordered, but I think it's the law in all states that charge sales tax.

Yep, I agree. The US is still a great country to live in, I just think that our best times are behind us.

Like you said, every time the government adds a program, then it takes a crap ton of tax payer money to support it, pay for all the employees salary, etc.

It's over taxation, and I think people are getting tired of it.

This is one area where I agree with Trump on. He's trying to get rid of a lot of the government programs, and I don't blame him for that, I support him. I'm not saying all of them need to be done away with, but there's a lot of them that are just BS, unnecessary jobs, draining tax payers money and adding to the deficit.

Texas began collecting sales tax on Amazon orders a few years ago. Amazon remains a good deal, if only for their return policies and the time one can spend wrenching rather than fighting bloody traffic trying to find something in a store.

I agree. Amazon always remains a good deal because of the customer service, the return policies, and their free 2-day shipping with Prime. Hell, Prime alone is worth the price, and Amazon obviously knows that.

Prime is awesome. They sent me an email stating I had saved somewhere over 300 in shipping by having Prime. Taking out the yearly 99, it is still a huge savings.

Here in WA yes it is called a use tax and if a business has any facility/store in the state then the sales tax has to be collected.

That has been the case for some time in NM also, just not for internet only sales where there is no physical store...
