Greta is taking over my world (not who you think)

About nine weeks old in that picture. My wife decided that we needed a dog. I really didn't want one and still think that when she does her business in the house but hopefully we get past that fairly soon.

Full breed miniature Schnauzer and named Greta before we got her. We're going to have her spayed and probably won't have her registered but if we do her full name will be Greta Von Strudel.

And here she is in her favorite napping position.

Obviously not the largest dog out there but she is hypoallergenic which helps everyone in the family.

She's already discovered ankles ( and anything else she can fit in her mouth). She should end up 12 to 14 inches at the shoulder and somewhere around 15 lbs. That weight is much less the miniature schnauzer I grew up with. From what I remember Greta's legs already look twice as long as his but it's really because her stomach is about 1/3 the size.

Cute Pup! I used to have a mating pair of Schnauzers. Dumb, loyal, not much good for anything other than to bring me joy on a daily basis and put a smile on my face. Dogs are great!

You're right, but wrong: We're the ones who are slaves to our pets. I figure I've spent $30,000 in the past eight years on healthcare issues with our two Dachshunds. The last bout with my wallet was only a few weeks ago, to the tune of $11,200 for her back surgery. We can't go anywhere without making arrangements for their care. You can leave 'em in the fenced (built for them) yard for hours, but they'll come in and soil the carpet, instead. No new furniture because of them. No new carpet because of them. Special food for them, because they cannot eat standard dog food without getting sick. So yeah, there's slavery involved. Ours!!!

For some reason when I read Feralkid's post the message I got was exactly what I bolded in Squatch's post. Apparently my reading comprehension level at that time was way off. Heck if I didn't read Squatches post I'd still think that.

Dogs have been "developed" from the wild canines of old (waaaaaaay old) to be shepards, protectors, and companions to Humans. At this point, leaving a dog to his or her own devices, i.e. "letting them leave", would be tantamount to abandonment of a child.
What, exactly do you think would happen to a dog if we were to "let them leave"? I can tell you what animal rescue workers will tell you; they will starve, they will become infested with parasites, if female and not spayed, will soon become pregnant and, by and large, unable to obtain enough nourishment to sustain themselves, much less their pups. If in an urban or suburban area, he/she will run a high risk of being hit by a car and killed...or worse...seriously injured. They will often fall prey to larger and tougher predators. They will have no safe harbor, no roof under which to rest when it rains, snows, or hails; no protector; no supplier of food; no one to love and provide for them.
We are not talking about wolves, wild dingos, foxes, or other truly wild animals, we are talking about domestic dogs; born and bred for generations to be companions, not frontiersmen.
