I can get this thread back on track.
My mom got a mini schnauzer and named her Greta when I was around 12. I've yet to find a dog breed that I like more than a mini schnauzer. Definitely not perceived as the most masculine dog to have, but if you want a great companion dog that will let you know if someone is at the door, won't eat you out of house and home, and won't ruin your vehicle interiors and your house with hair and slobber everywhere, it's hard to beat.
It made enough of an impression on me that I've so far owned two dogs of my own, both mini schnauzers.
Evie was the first (named for Natalie Portmans character in V for Vendetta), in 2007. She was a complete maniac, and I'm pretty sure had some sort of neurological condition because at around 11 months old, she started vomiting continuously, then within about 4 days descended into seizures to the point that she was kept sedated and died at the vets office while I was on my way there to be present while she was euthanized. The vets ruled out all the likely stuff but never figured out what it was.
A rare moment of calm (laying on me was about the only times she wasn't running around or destroying something, yet oddly when she got sick and was gone in a matter of half a week those traits became somehow endearing).
Three months later I got another, named Ripley (named for Sigourney Weavers character in the Alien franchise).
She, like Greta, was pretty much the perfect dog...got wild and played when you wanted to play, was super chill when you wanted to chill, watched TV (loved barking at horses on TV), rode great in the car, and was amazingly protective of my pregnant wife.
I got a kick out of losing the schnauzer cut and just having her all the same length.
I had her for 9 years, but unfortunately once my first son got old enough to move around on his own she got nervous. She was always super stressed out around him and snapped at him a couple of times, and I didn't feel like having her locked up any time the kid was out was fair or any kind of life for her, so I gave her to my aunt and uncle who spoiled her rotten for about a year until she got out their front door never to be seen again.
She was such a great dog that she kinda ruined me from even wanting another one. But, I lost the battle and my wife is on a waiting list for a English cocker spaniel-poodle mix to be born later this year.
