Got my first Jeep. It’s a 97 TJ. 4 banger. Has 4.10 gears with 15” rims and 33” tires. If I want to go to 17 rims and 35 tires, will a 4.88 gear handle it or will it be too much for the 4 cylinder?
X2 to that! I took off my 35’s and went to 31’s. What a difference. It’s so much nicer to drive , gas mileage is way up and now I can get in the f’n thing! That will be way too much for the 4 cylinder unless you plan to only use it off-road at slow speeds.
35s on a 4 cylinder for on-road driving is going to be one of the most miserable experiences of your life.

You know you can still do a lot of trails and have a great time, this is my YJ w/ 33's and a 4 cyl and 4:88'sthank you all for the replies! I will just stick with 33s. Sucks but it is what it is.
I agree, and 15's are a better choice for 33's anyway. At least so long as you also want to go offroading.I’ll stick with the 33s. I wish I could at least do 17” rims but I think it would look odd.
Not at all, you just snap a new slightly larger diameter speedometer gear into the transfer case. Easy to do it just requires 5 minutes and a 1/2" wrench. Is fixing the speedometer from stock to having 33s a big deal?
