The dreaded 06 PCM problem

2005 Lj New Transmission rebuild in 2018 New/Rebuild PCM/TCM Computer 2019 Multiple codes on transmission Computer gone bad again! Anyone just run a disconnect switch from the battery to inside the your jeep? "Engine light comes on" throw the switch wait few minutes and drive a few more weeks. Computer from fs1-inc was $1,000. Life time 1 free replacement, working on them sending me another. Jeep computer repair company in the Carolina's had a fix few year's ago"they came up with a separate transmission pcm and pig tail. Anyone use them? Can't find the company listed anymore?

Hey friends,

I have a 2006 TJ automatic. I have had my car for 12 years- bought it brand new and never had a problem with the PCM. I actually never had ANY issue with the jeep until it hit 11 years old- always ran beautifully! And this is has been the only car I have owned in 12 years; it runs everyday.

So after switching out a handful of parts in the past few weeks I am still having issues and believe it is the computer and am having issues finding a place locally to fix it without spending a fortune. Has anyone had any luck with the plug-n-drive replacements? Give them your vin and no additional programming required??

What issues are you having? Have you gone through the troubleshooting section of the FSM?

My 05 TJ manual 4.0 would cut off randomly at every 30-100 miles, and wouldn't pass emissions because I guess when that happens the computer resets. I bought one from Wranglerfix.com and have gone 250 miles and passed emissions this past week. If you need a pcm I suggest getting it from them.

So the other day a problem returned that I hoped never would. The PCM problem in 05 and 06 automatics. I was wondering if anyone has taken they're Jeep to a dealer and they flashed it.
I may be 2 years too late but I thought I’d chime in with my PCM experience. I have a 05 RUBI a/c and a/t. I got the CEL after my Jeep started running rough. I got several codes. Cat was bad, both upstream o2s were showing up bad and a fuel injector. Replaced cat, bank 1 on old one was collapsed and plugged. Replaced all o2s but both upstream remained inactive. Thought maybe it was PCM. Long story short. Before I dropped huge money on a new PCM I decided to physically check my wiring from pcm to each and every plug. Not far from the PCM, where the accumulator is the wire loom rested over it. I put my fingers under the loom there and found a hole that the vibration of the motor wore a hole into and severed many wires throughout 15years Well hidden disaster. I unplugged the battery and all 4 plugs going to PCM and started repairing wires. When I finished I plugged everything back in, started it back up. The Jeep ran smooth. No CEL light, no codes. I fixed the problem. It wasn’t easy to find. My Jeep was down since August 2019. My original PCM has 168,000 miles and still going. It’s not always bad components, it could be broken wires or both. Hope this helps.Good luck fellow Jeepsters.

For now, every few weeks or so when it starts messing up, I reset the PCM and it fixes it usually its a few months but sometimes it could be a few days. It is very strange to say the least

what are you doing to reset PCM? one source says to disconnect then ground positive, reconnect then flash the lights, yet many argue this is dangerous. Other sources say to disconnect the negative, then positive, then connect them together for 5 mins, reattach and flash lights. I am not sure which to try first.

Figured I would at least try self resetting PCM before dropping another $600 on a new PCM

I just disconnected the negative cable on mine when mine started acting up. It started out every now and then, sometime months between episodes. Eventually it got more and more frequent to the point of almost every day. I got a PCM from @Wranglerfix almost 1 year and have had no issues since.

I have had mine in for 6 months from Wranglerfix. And I haven't had any issues and passed emission test and all good. Not sure why my other one went bad, but its all good now.

hey know its an old post — did you ever find a solution or flash your PCM at dealer? cousin has identical issue; after reading seems like best option to fully fix is wranglerfix pcm, but at the same time there are few posts to find stating that a flash didn't work. most posts say people are going to try something then we never hear back!

I don't recall ever seeing anyone say a flash worked for the long term. I could be wrong though.

Hey RubiTJ05, thanks for sharing your experience! I have an 06 & had to change the PCM about 2 years ago after having it for 10 years. A few months ago, the car blew the starter fuse. Changed it, ran fine. A cpl months ago it blew the fuse again. Now, the check engine light came on and it's throwing the PCM codes. Reading your post, makes me think that it might be some sort of wiring issue or maybe even the 02 sensor.

were you having PCM related issues? Or mainly just the CEL?

I was looking at my car the other day and noticed a similar spot near the accumulator where the vibrations had cracked the plastic sheath covering wires. I didnt get a chance to inspect wires yet for damage, hoping they're fine. However- once you repaired the wires, what did you do to keep the wires from continuing to vibrate against the accumulator?

Hey guys, so I have a 05 with m/t and have a very similar issue as tntitans21399. Pcm resets with throttle snaps, or occasionally while starting, check engine light flashes once and pcm is cleared with no codes and all monitors reset. Traced all wires back to pcm and verified perfect. I cracked the pcm open and everything is clean. Monitored each sensor looking for a canbus crash and replaced some sensors. I’m suspect to the plug connection to pcm, and in the process to depin and tighten things up. Vin changes are easy on these pcms with the use of an Autel, also monitor forcing with hp tuner. I’ll have to double check the ecu pin outs but I’m pretty sure swapping to the 04 pcm should be easy with little modifications to software features to move away from the 05-06 problem children.
