Project Overland: Slowly building my LJ Rubicon into a diesel powered overland rig

I really wish we could get the Nissan patrol diesel motors in the states. Those things used to be bullet proof and torquey

There are several diesel engines that were sold overseas that I wish I could easily get my hands on here as well. It's hard to find small diesels in the US. I really don't have a need for anything over 3.0l personally myself and I prefer inline engines as well, they are easier to work on!

Hey Grant. I haven't really followed along with your other thread closely, but have you looked up QuickDraw Brands? They are mentioned in a podcast I listen to, and going to their site, it seems he makes bellhousings and adapters for a LOT of different stuff and based on the podcast, I'd say way more than what is listed on the site. Maybe that's where you got the Kubota adapters and stuff the first time? Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there.

I had not actually! I'm actually surprised to see he already has a Cummins R2.8 to 6r80 adapter as well. This is really changing how I want to build my LJ Rubicon.

Maybe I will go with the Cummins engine after all. I really thought I would go with the Kubota engine again because of cost, but I found an R2.8 near me, well 2 hours away, I wonder if I need to make a deal for that engine and go the Cummins route instead . . . hmmm

I think you do!

Why not put the liberty diesel engine into the LJ, you have it already correct?

I'm seriously considering it! I have a slight issues with my CRD engine at the moment, though it's my own fault, I have been thinking about pulling the entire drivetrain out and swapping it into my LJ. Ideally I'd like to get ride of the 545rfe and replace it with a 6r80 or even a 10r80 automatic from Ford once they have a controller for the 10r80.

So figured I'd update everyone. I'm not starting this build until my TJ is done, which I thought was going to be last year but that's just how it goes.

My current thought is the following for the drivetrain:

  • TDI Swap Kit from Koty Built. Allows me to keep my AC and all my accessories and I don't have to swap gauges.
  • Ford 10r80 10-speed automatic transmission. It looks like USShift will be starting to sell controllers for the 10r80 later this year hopefully
  • My Eco Box Doubler from Northwest Fab
  • NP241OR
  • GenRight Safari 31.5 gallon aluminum fuel tank
I'm not sure what the wheel/tire/lift combination is going to be yet, kind of want to just tackle the swap first.

In terms of crawl ratio, with my current axles and tires, my crawl ratio is going to be a ridiculous 210.17:1. Though I doubt I'll ever use double low, it will be nice to have 2.72:1 low range and 4:1 low range as well.

Thanks
Grant

Is it possible to attach the Eco Box to an NP231 or what are you getting the 2.72 from?

SO many people post their goals and I'm like ya right, you'll be lucky to do 1/4 but when you post a list I know yup he'll do it!

31 gallons of fuel and a TDI, are you trying to drive to California while only stopping once?:ROFLMAO:

What generation TDI are you using?
Well I mean that would be nice! In all seriousness I want to do overlanding to the point where I can go where there is no population and explore as much as possible, the only way to truly do that is have a huge range. Also when you start wheeling and offroading your range decreases as well.
Is it possible to attach the Eco Box to an NP231 or what are you getting the 2.72 from?
I already had my EcoBox connected to a NP231, it gave me a double low range of 7.4:1. The Eco Box is either hi range of 1:1 or Low Range of 2.72:1, then it feeds that into the transfer case which would now be a NP241OR so a 4:1 range. If I have both in low range, the Eco Box and the NP241OR my low range would be 10.88:1.

I'm getting close to having my first list done on my Kubota diesel swap TJ, though I ended up with a transmission I never thought I would run so I like to think that even though it might be a few years, I'll still accomplish what I set out to build!

I missed the second part of your question, I think I would be using the BEW TDI. Really it's whatever TDI I have to use with Coty Builts kit. I'm done the the entire hassle of gettings gauges, wirings and the accessory system to work with a different motor, having done that once already, I'm more than ready to have a kit that already has that stuff figured out and can have a harness that allows the TDI ECU to communicate with the Jeep ECU so everything still works as it should.

While I love my RHD TJ, I would like to keep the interior of my LJ Rubicon as stock as possible.
