What is the stereo in your TJ? Double, single or maybe basic?

Hi Everyone

First post.

I’m doing the research on the whole audio upgrade now. Speakers are all about preference. I’m looking for “full” not so much “loud”

That being said, I know I own a Jeep and I’m definitely taking the top down and bringing the dogs for rides so loud is a necessity.

Heres my build for my 02 TJ so far.

Kenwood ksc-sw11 - for the mid bass which will go under the seat.

Polk mm1 6x4 - for strong mid range presence located in the dash

Infinity REF-5022cfx 135W 5-1/4" Reference Series - location in sound bar. The Infinity speakers are coaxial & they come highly rated. Do you think I should add component tweeters? Maybe on the frame in the front.

Jensen vx4014 stereo - single din w CarPlay and the screen that comes out.

I still have the subwoofer compartment available......

What is a quality 6.75 inch subwoofer that will handle the lower bass frequencies? I want to have a strong midbass (melodic bass) presence in the car for dance & hip hop and produced rock but dont want to miss the bass (drums) dropping hard. Should the subwoofer be bigger? Can the existing compartment fit an 8inch
sub? Does that even matter since the sub is right next to your hip?

Thanks to everyone for reading and feedback.

Hi...this stereo screen is very stable. I did add little felt pads to the outer corners of the screen - you can see them in the last two images of my original post. That was just my own preference.

What are your thoughts on the screen? Does it bounce around too much? Is it stable?

Thanks Edward and IPerk.

Does anyone have any experience running a flip up head unit? The reason why I ask is that those may not be as sturdy as a single piece, especially on a very bumpy Jeep ride.

Double din KENWOOD because of apple car play and I have forward and rear facing cameras that can be used separately from when the vehicle is in reverse etc. I have the forward facing camera to help me navigate rough trails

Great. Thank you. How’s the construction of it. Is it just as durable as the stock
How do u like the ax 100 ?
I bought the 1000, I'm not sure of the differences between it and the 100.

I really like it. The Metra dash bezel and the Sony have been durable and had no issues.

It is an easy install. The mounting bracket needed a little trimming, but the dash did not since only the face is double din size.

I've posted about this in the What Did You Do to Your TJ thread, but I'll post in a dedicated stereo post for others to see. Since I have the silver center bezel, I didn't want to go double-DIN. And I didn't want a flip up. So I ended up going with a single-DIN 8.8" widescreen floating bezel unit from Joying that met all of my requirements. I didn't want it to block the HVAC controls or vents, and I didn't want to see the single-DIN adapter, and most importantly, I wanted something that would run Apple CarPlay. That left this as pretty much the only option. I couldn't be happier.

I've run Alpine and Sony CarPlay units in my last two JKs and the last LJ and this unit has a far better screen (resolution, responsiveness, construction). There are some quirks with CarPlay on an Android-based head-unit, but I really can't complain for the cost. It fits perfectly, looks great, quality is very good and only took a few tweaks to get exactly where it needs to be.

I had the XAV-1000 but then found the 100. The only two differences in the Sony units I could find was the 1000 has front USB input but the 100 has rear. Crutchfield let me trade out the 1000 for a 100 and I used this. Like it better because of the manual trans shifter.

I have a similar bezel and Sony radio. Bought them from Crutchfield. The bezel is every bit as good as stock. I have seen some double DIN bezels that dont come with the top tray and you have to use the original one. Mine came complete with tray.

That looks fantastic. Thanks. How it is when suns out top off. Is it hard to see in sunlight

That pretty much sold me I’m ordering the Unit and parts tonight.

I have a single DIN Alpine that has bluetooth and a USB port. I have a USB cable going into the glove box where I connect a thumb drive. That way I can have 30GB of music which is more than I need.

IIRC, it was around $200 installed, but that was around 5 years ago. I do really like the features of Android Auto in my 2018 F150. If I bought a new stereo today, I'd get one that is AA capable which makes it so you don't need navigation, you can just use Google maps on your phone and it will show on the radio screen.

Its just fine to see in the sunlight but I usually do have a bikini top. Last spring I was completely topless for a few weeks and dont remember any issues with screen brightness. I believe I was able to adjust the screen brightness in the settings. Last time I looked my exact model was no longer available but one very much like it was. It lets you upload one, only one, jpg to use as background. The factory backgrounds make reading the screen very hard so I uploaded a flag. I also had a blank background for a while that was just a pic with my finger over the phone camera lens.

I installed the same kit a couple of years ago. I basically just wanted something with Apple Carplay without breaking the bank. Took about a half hour to install, wasn't bad at all.

Two years in and lots of bumpy trails later it still works like a champ.

As satisfied as I am with my double DIN Sony I might seriously consider this if I was to do it again.

I was fine with the XAV-AX100 in my JK, and would've considered one again if they were still available and I wanted to switch out to the black bezel. I didn't want the 1000 since I don't like the front USB input. And the Alpine iLX-007 was OK in my LJ before, though that was kind of a first-get CarPlay unit, so it was a little glitchy.

The thing that I like best about this other than the size/shape/fit is the quality glass screen. It just feels like a much nicer unit than the plastic screens on other head units. It even feels much nicer than the one in our Touareg. I've gone back and forth about adding an anti-glare screen protector, but it's been fine as is.

This is the exact set up I am looking for with the ax 100. What brand bezel did you use? Or was this done with the stock face.
It’s the Metra kit that I got from Crutchfield. I like the bezel but the brackets for mounting the receiver behind the dash were garbage. Much too thin plastic with tons of holes so the brackets kept cracking. Ended up having to use flashing to sandwich the brackets to provide more meat And still be able to use the provided screws
