Thanks Blackjack.That is about as deep as you can go. You are just starting to get a sharp line on the root side of the pattern which is an indicator of being on the deep side. Definitely not coming off the crown and that is a good thing.
Thanks Arg (you’ll always be Arg to me). I think I‘ll pull a thou or two out tomorrow and see if I loose that sharp line at the bottom. These 2 cut gears make a pattern like I’ve never seen before.It's about time you tackled gears! lol This is looking better now that you got the angle out, but the pinion is a little too deep. The flat bottom and half moon is classic deep pinion. I'd remove a little pinion shim and rerun another pattern.

I have a couple customers I sell the AAM gears (OE GM and Dodge) and they just throw the old pinion shim in set them a 4 thou backlash and let em eat. How they do not have more issues I do not know. Maybe we are just too picky when it comes to getting a pattern.You're teaching me something new with these double cut patterns! I would've been bewildered too when I saw that!
Lou - I thought that previous pattern was bad because the pattern went right off the top of the tooth on the coast side. Is too deep worse than too shallow - or am I missing something?I think i like the previous pattern more than the current pattern.
This one is too deep for me. You can see that on the coast side.OK - I did two more setups today, going a bit deeper on the pinion depth, and this is the one that I think is best. It's hard to tell in the pics, but in the previous setups the patterns were definitely going off the top of the tooth. This time I think I've got the pattern fairly well centered between the root and the top. It is biased just a bit toward the toe. Backlash is 6 thou - the recommended range is 6-8 thou.

I don't know the actual pinion depth as I don't have a way to measure it. However, the inner pinion shim was 51 thou in post 25. In post #37 the pinion shim was 61 thou - so 10 thou deeper. I started at 49, and along the way I've tried 57, 54 and 64.What was the pinion depth on post 25 and what is the latest patterns pinion depth?

Thanks for that Lou. I have a caliper similar to that one. I switched over to a micrometer which was just a bit easier for me to handle, and It seemed to give me more consistent results.I’ve had this caliper for almost 4 years. It’s proven to be pretty damn accurate and it always returns to 0.

It does look deep still. BUT you are getting very close now. Since you've been in there 100 times nowOK - once again into the breach. Pulled 2 thou out of the pinion shim, down to 59 thou. Set backlash to 6.
Still looks like good clearance at the top on both sides. Does it still look too deep?

, you might try taking ten thou out and see what it looks like. Then you will for sure be bracketed and can get it perfect from there. My guess is that another three thou will be perfect.

On normal gears, I wouldn't run this pattern. But on the feedback I'm seeing from the off patterns on double cut gears, and this is the best you've gotten, I thought it was acceptable. So on the patterns that are centered and too deep, once you start to back out the pinion, it gets angled and high? Tighten up the BL to 005" and see if the pattern centers betterHelp me understand that. Again to me it looks like the pattern is running off the top of the tooth on the coast side, and not centered between the root and the top. Everything I’ve read says that’s bad. What am I missing?
