What's the Favorite Mid-Level GMRS Radio?

I f the FCC ever pulls their head out of their butt, the license fee is supposed to drop to $35 for 10 years.

I can access 4 different repeaters in my area, one of which is 40 miles away. Careful, just like a jeep addiction, this radio thing can be equally addicting. I just ordered my 2nd handheld (HT). I have my 1st one on the front deck hooked up to a 5db gain antenna on the roof of my house. Antenna placement is key.

I have three Yaesu ftm 400xdr’s that I modded for GMRS use. The unit in my Jeep is a 25yo Standard tri band that is modded.

Modding is not illegal. Using a non part 95 compliant radio is. Mars/Cap mod can be done by shops if you have the card.

I also have a pair of uv5’s or the variants in each vehicle. All programmed using chirp.

building a GMRS repeater is super easy using a couple of radios, a (quality) duplexer and and link. I like the “ID-O-MATIC” link due to both voice and code station ID, hang tone, tot, etc.

Anyone in the inland empire is welcome to PM me for my tones and freqs. It’s a high level repeater that covers upland to corona and chino hills to riverside. I can open it on a few spots up on gold mountain in big bear.

I listen in to NotARubicon's repeaters in your area via the Zello app. Cool tech!

What is the zello app? How does it link up?
Look in your playstore on your phone. You install it, sign up, then search for NotARubicon. He uses a KG905G and some other tech to hook up to a laptop and the internet. You can listen in to 3 repeaters that are linked up. You can also transmit to said repeaters if you have a gmrs license and request trust permission from the Moderators of the repeaters. It doesn't really serve a whole lot of purpose other than entertainment factor.

I've been convinced to just get a HAM license then crack a HAM radio to use both HAM and GMRS frequencies.
It's not really a hack. The UV-5R can very easily programmed to work on all the GMRS frequencies. There are files you can download to the radio and POOF, the radio has all of them. GMRS frequencies are within the ham bands, if you have a 70cm ham radio you can access them all with not a single trick or card up your sleeve.

I already have UV5Rs. Im talking about mobile radios with more power and range.

The GMRS version says it has pre programmed channels, it probably does. I have built a few portable repeaters houses in medium sized pelican cases. You can take them along with you to camp and have some good coverage.

this one is not a repeater but can tx on GMRS. It has two life PO batts and is charged with two 10w solar panels. Also has a 400w 110v inverter.
