Show me your hood vents

Do you think wrapping the injectors without the heat shield is the way to go?
You would think some vents placed over the manifold would help.

I still get some heat soak after replacing the factory shield with the DEI kit on my 2004. Not as bad but still happens during really hot summer restarts.
I don't know.

My symptoms are very rough idle after slow trail riding on a hot day, if I don't shut it off I just get the very rough idle but the one time I did shut it off I got the hard start. I have an 04 and don't have the heat shield, it could have been removed before me I'm not sure. My first step is probably the DEI kit mentioned above then louvers next if that doesn't fix it.

The top of my hood is dented so I don't mind cutting into it to add louvers but does rain affect anyone? I'm concerned about leaving it out in the parking lot at work and it getting poured on. It seems like that wouldn't be good for the engine. In Missouri we can get big rains and I'm imagining it running into the louvers.

Same. Didn't really help much.
I don't live where it's super hot but my data point for you is I did stop getting heat soak rough startups after idle after i added Grand Cherokee vents at the back top areas.

Imagine what happens on the Highway in a rain storm. I think you’ll be fine.

I have popped the hood in my TJ after driving around town in heavy rain, purposely trying to hit puddles to help get mud off. The engine was pretty dry.
I'm pretty surprised by that, just because I would expect the fan to splatter it all over. I will have to give it a try and see what it's like with my vented hood.

Did those louvers seem to help for the heat soak? I don't think I have any cooling issues just that the heat under the hood sticks around when I'm offroad because I'm usually just slowly crawling up or down a trail. It seems like louvers would let that heat escape easier.

Are you referring to the engine heat shield and the fuel rail and injector wraps for the factory fix?
They do help. About the only time I have an issue now is when we are Yard Saling in the 105 degree heat, and then not always.
The factory fix is sparkplug insulation around the number 3 injector.

the engine is pretty hot, too. 🤫

There really was no water anywhere in the engine compartment and I had been hitting the biggest puddles I could. The engine compartment was very dirty from hitting a mud hole too fast before this. Running around hitting puddles did not touch any mud under the hood so regardless of heat and evaporation, I dont think any water got in there just from driving.

I'm curious about it sitting still out in the parking lot and the rain pouring onto the hood and just running into the open louvers. As I'm typing this it's pouring outside.

THats one nice thing about the GC vents, they have a pan that channels water. Sometimes when questions of good enough or not come up its a good reference point to see how the OEM would address it. Typically OEMs will not leave wide open holes through the hood into the engine bay but keep in mind there are a lot of open holes to the engine bay on a TJ. MANY people have the bent metal vents on TJ hoods so it's likely safe to say it's not an issue but if it worries you there are ways to address it.

I think the JL hood vents would be cool if you can find a bent up hood. Here is how Jeep decided to deal with hood vents.

Good point. I wouldn't mind finding some GC vents for that reason.

They’re not really vents anymore though, they’re just drains for a piece of trim.

That may be, this is the extent of my JL knowledge. do you have pics of the hood vents from teh inside? It looks like there may be space for air to flow around the circumference.

You're right, it looks like there's a few small holes around the outside, so maybe it's slightly a vent still.
