RCV axles vs u-joint axles?

Looking for a set of front axles for my Dana 30. Been looking at the RCV axles and Revolution U-joint axles and having a difficult time trying to decide. I'm not aware of any issues with RCV's.
So is one better than the other, other than cost.
Both have lifetime warranties.

1350 U-joint axles
 
I think it depends on the type of 4 wheeling you do. I think deep snow vs rock crawling would be the 2 extremes. I will give the snow example, but I have no rock experience, just a theory.

Snow (and deep sand hill climbs) sometimes requires alot of speed and heavy throttle. That's why you see alot of jeeps in the mid west converted to V8s. When you are trying to turn when really thrashing on the throttle, you can feel the steering wheel pulling back and forth in your hands. I believe that's because u-joints speed up and slow down 2 times per revolution ( that's why a driveshaft without a double cardan at the tcase needs equal angles at both ends. They cancel each other out). So, the between the spline of the axle shaft and the tire you have this u joint wanting to go straight, but it cant because you are forcing it to run at an angle with the steering wheel. You can see the front wheels moving back and forth if the jeep is coming at you. This is when I see u joints break. This is when I think RCVs would shine. A ball and cage cv joint transfers power much smoother than a u joint. It's why grand cherokees with full time cases had CVs in the front axle( they are not really strong enough for bigger tires, too bad)

I think in rock crawling ( no experience, just theory) the speeds are much slower and throttle application is much more controlled. You probably would not have the steering at full lock and apply full power if you could help it. Maybe a u joint is better ( or equal) in these situations.

From what I have seen, the stock size u joints are strong enough. I think bigger (stronger ) u joints will possibly just transfer the break to the ring and pinion. No thanks. Axle shaft can be swapped out in minutes. I pulled a Dana 44 carrier out on the trail once because of a shrapnelled ring and pinion in 20 degrees and snow. That sucked, but led to good stories later in the garage over a couple of beers.

rambled on), my opinion:
Snow/sand= RCV would be cool

Rocks=u joints ok?

Oversize u joints= transfers the problem to something else.

One last thing. Full circle snap rings help keep the caps on the u joint much better. That helps prevent the cap from ejecting out of the axle shaft.
 
I personally have never seen a reason to run RCV axles. I've never had the u-joint issue RCV and RCV lovers love to point out as the reason to go to RCVs. I've had perfect experience running 4340 front axle shafts with 5-760x u-joints on my previous TJ and CTM u-joints on my current TJ. RGA's 4340 axle shafts with 5-1350x would be a bulletproof combo too.

We're mostly in the rocks and some high water crossings.
So if, what you're saying I should be able to get by with RGA's Discovery series and asve a few bucks for another mod....

Are both the 1350 and 760 bolt up and go for an '06 TJUR Dana 44 with no mods to the OEM setup?

I'll be running this as a 'trail' rig, hunting and group runs mostly with possibly one trip to Moab. I'm good at spending more than necessary for whatever reason. I did notice the comment above about the bigger joints moving the weak point to the R&P and that seems logical. So, maybe it's Discovery for me. I have also noticed "RGA USA" made in the comments. Are there some RGA axles not made in the US, the Discovery maybe?

I ordered discovery series fronts from. Northridge, knowing they were back ordered, about 10 days ago. They sent an email saying they would be drop shipped from RGA when available. They showed up on my doorstep in 7 days.

The USA made and imported Discovery shafts only vary by the lifetime vs. 10 year warranty. I'd go for the Discovery shafts, they are made the same way as the USA shafts are.
 
I have RCV axles for my HP44. But I don't have an option for larger u-joints with my axle so the RCV axles made more sense.
The reason I know some people go to RCV axles is because if you do break a u-joint it can take out your ball joints also.
As Paul pointed out and I agree a lot depends on the type of wheeling you are doing.
I broke on a trail that still had snow on it and it took out both the inner and outer shafts when it broke. They were Alloy USA shafts so I got them replaced.
 
My TJ came with the RCVs. I rebuilt them once and would rather do a u-joint if I had the choice. If I choose to build the LJ more, I will go with revolution axles with larger u-joints.
 
I recently had to do a mountain/field repair on my niece's TJ. The u-joint went out and took out the ears on the stub axle as well. The ball joints seemed OK--at least to get off the mountain. Stock axles/u-joints are vulnerable on a Dana 30.

Here's my point--money is going to be spent either way. Cromoly axles with stronger u-joints or the RCV. Depending on choices, the RCV may not be that much more expensive. I don't really think casting this as a cost choice is the best way to frame the question.

FWIW, I chose the RCVs for my Dana 44. I don't have any regrets about that choice but I'm pretty sure if I went with American Revolution with the strong u-joints I would also be happy.

Two things about the RCVs: clearance on the knuckles and the hassle of the initial install. I eventually went with a BBK kit that included knuckles with enough clearance for the RCV joint. That was more $$$ but my TJ doesn't operate on a budget.

My thoughts are to go with a set of chromoly USA or import shafts with the TJ size u-joint…
RCVs and 1350 joint shafts are way overkill for the Dana 30, in my opinion…
I’d rather replace a stock sized axle u-joint than get into the carnage of my center section that the stronger, more expensive, axle shafts transferred to it..

I thought the American made got the 1350 series U-joints and the Discovery got the 760s?
