next is safety glasses, more sparks hit off my lid and bounce into my face than if i didn't have it on sometimes.

magnets are ok but clamping your project works best.

i prefer a thin leather glove on my project hand and no glove on my gun hand.
i'd rather have a good hat then sleeves never had need of a jacket or coat, my head gets burned all the time, but not much makes it through my work shirt sleeve, just regular old cintas uniform blues.

the most painful spot you can take a spark is eye, in the nose and into the ear. once you have burned one of those 2 (cause your gonna wear your glasses) you're bulletproof and the rest of the sparks become no more than a minor nuisance.

Definitely agree here! I got some deerskin leather from home Depot that have been great. I usually wear both except when I wear neither.

I use magnets for the angles mostly, if I had a right angle clamp that would definitely be better.

if you come across a couple pieces of 2 x 2 x 3/16 or 1/4" x 2ft angle cheap....snag it.
and use your framing square to make your self a welding square. then you have a 90* jig with some vertical walls to clamp to.

The slag piece in your ear has to be the most painful to me.
I've ruined a few t-shirts from slag falling on me. Which was why I'd suggested a welding jacket to JMT.

Now that you mention it, I believe it does run flex core. Are you suggesting I could get a roll to use for practice?

A neighbor and I owned a big miller together and we sold it. Later I decided we needed a 140 Lincoln at the farm and figured the 120V would be nice for portability. But set up for shielding gas in the shop and started welding with it. Has all sorts of trouble laying a decent bead. Did a little checking, turns out the polarity was factory set up for flux core and needed changed to run bare wire w/ gas. DUH!

Yep you need to pay attention to polarity depending on how you are welding.

I planned to get some sleeves or a jacket bc I already ruin enough shirts working in the garage. Miller has a fairly cheap one.

As for gloves, I was thinking of using Tig gloves since they’re thinner. The deerskin ones sound good though. I’ve had several pair in the past.

Are the clamps welding specific? I have several clamps I used for woodworking. Some have rubber pads which I assume I wouldn’t use, but others don’t.

What do you use welding pliers for exactly? Never mind. I see now they’re used for cutting the wire. Any other reason? Hold pieces?

Yes! Keeps spatter from sticking to the nozzle.

You change it by if the ground cable to either positive or negative. And then the same with the cable that comes out of the machine.

The pliers have a few useful things on them:

1. Wire clipper, you'll trim the end of your gun fairly regularly
2. The right size hole to easily swap the nozzle contact (buy a pack of those)
3. The outside of the pliers is abrasive to help clean the inside of the nozzle.

Ok, thanks. I have one clamp like that from my Kreg Jig set. They are nice for a task like this. They are more out of the way.

I watched for them to go on sale at HF and bought a few. They ain't the best quality but.
