05 Flame Red TJ Build

Read a thread years ago on Challenger forum of guys comparing their home paint jobs vs others pro jobs — Both had orange peel.

It was a question on the depth and visibility of that peel. Like you said - factory jobs have it too. Best effort to distort the effects.

Enjoying watching your job paint jobs. I'm working towards painting more than flat black spray jobs on skids & frame...

Man, prep and painting is a pain, but what got me past black paint on frames and bumpers is a story.

I bought my son a 05’ TJR that was ridiculously well priced, but had rust issues out of Ohio. It came with a cool set of sliders. When we tried to remove them we had trouble and I tried to use heat on the back side. It caused the paint to ruin just behind the lower corner of the door. I felt bad. Here we were trying to salvage this rust bucket jewel and I made it worse. I told him I’d fix it. I knew it would take a lot of work and practice before I tried. There was no paint there, and I’d have to build layers and blend it all in.

I had a rear Savvy tailgate armor and valance. It was raw, and I wanted to color match it. I tried the Perfect Match and that color sucked. I decided to try some cheap Rustoleum called Sunset Red. It was surprisingly close. I worked really hard on prep and technique on that job. I knew spray cans could never be good enough, but I figured if I could get really good with cans, then I could spray paint his very noticeable spot I ruined.

Next project involved corner armor for his TJR. The rear corner panel was rusted all the way through. Hole was about 5x6”. We got all the rust out, converted it, and then came the armor. Perfect Match was spot on for his Patriot Blue. I was super scared on this one bc I was still working with cans. It’s his Jeep. He’s really OCD. Technique had paid off, and they turned out amazing.

We went right on to the spot. It turned out reall pretty good. It’s difficult to notice. I felt more challenged by the sanding and spray technique by far on this spot.

I’m just happy he was happy.

I hope someone enjoys this story. Now I’m on to HVLP with my very cheap setup, but the color match is great, and the 2K clear is a dream. I need a lot more practice. I occasionally overspray and get a run. Fixing something like that is a lot of work and expensive.

The next step for me would be removing orange peel. I don’t think it’s hard, just scary and time consuming.

Not sure. I haven't been on this trail. I ran Denver a couple weeks ago. Fun trail.

I had to look back to see when you painted those fenders. It was a 'blink and you miss it' moment among your door posted. Love that look!

Just getting mine rolling again after major work on mine and I have the same flares and been looking for ideas. I like the way you went with that paint job! Saving off the images for potential future reference.

That looks so tidy. But you deserve a good looking Jeep, you put in the time and make the effort not jusr to do the work but also to learn new skills which allow you to always be taking it to the next level. I take my hat off to you.

I made a 10 minute video today on how to paint with an HVLP gun. Includes materials, prep, and painting.

I just digging into your Flame Red thread and came across your video on "how to paint...." I'm about ready to dive down this rabbit hole and and making my list of things I need to purchase to see how much $ damage to the wallet I'm getting into. My first and perhaps biggest item on the list is the Air Compressor. You mentioned that yours is just at the point where it works but wouldnt want to go smaller... What size of compressor, and air flow cfm is it putting out for you? Can you give me a recommendation on a similar unit? I don't really want to go to the 60 gal sized tanks because of cost and size. Any specific advice, brands, models, info that can help me in purchasing a compressor that will get the job done would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

My compressor is rated at 5.0cfm at 90psi and is 22 gallon capacity.

It takes my compressor 11 min 30 seconds to refill to 125psi from empty. Test yours so you know what you're dealing with .

It works for the HVLP gun, but the change in the spray rate is noticeable once the psi drops below 90. Of course, the compressor is already on by that point trying to recover. That's ok, but know you're now spraying out less paint and you may want to stop and pick back up when it recovers.

That's the reason I only paint something about the size of a door or TJ corner armor in a single pass. Then I will allow the unit to recover and go again. This works because the flash time is usually 8 minutes at the minimum. Then I can do another coat.

While I would love to have a higher rated capacity compressor, I am very limited on space. I picked mine up on Marketplace for $100 about a year ago.

p.s. My paint at the local Automotive Paint Supply store cost me about $270. That includes: 2 cans 1K self Etch Primer filler, 1 quart color match, 1 small can 4:1 activator, 1 quart 2K Clear, two paint cups, filters, stir sticks, HVLP paint gun (Harbor Freight). TALK TO THOSE PEOPLE. They know everything you need to know. @bobthetj03 is also a great resource. He used to do this for a living.

p.s. my wife and I just finished the Beckham series. I was a big footballer when I was younger and played division 3 in Kansas and for the club team at Texas Tech. My greatest frustration was finding competition because all the good athletes in America drifted toward American football, basketball, or baseball. I have always felt a little out of place in America, and felt like my true home would be somewhere in Europe. It's probably just my love for the more relaxed European lifestyle and football. One place I have wanted to go badly for many years, just for the football and the pubs and the people is Britain! As much as I told my wife how popular the game of football is, it didn't register with her till she saw Beckham. Like Posh, she still doesn't care for it, but she was impressed with some of the highlights. The irony is about 3 months ago I picked it back up at age 49. I now spend a couple of 35-45 minute training sessions each week regaining my skill set. Cheers!

I've been to exactly one soccer game in my life and that was because Beckham was playing and I figured it'd be neat to see him play. I thought the game was boring and didn't care for it. What I noticed was that of the ~15,000 people in attendance ~14,500 were there to see him and didn't care about the game either.

Thank you for kind sir for this information. I think you are the first to reassure me that I am not crazy for thinking small compressor (30 gal) and Harbor Freight guns... I was considering picking up the HF Black Widow HTE as I have heard that the HTEs operate with a lower pressure at the gun. Thanks also for the paint specifics. Much Appreciated. Cheers!

My personal hypothesis is that Americans thought that football was what they were doing with the oblong shaped pig skin. Oops.

The fender work turned out surprisingly well. I was up in the air about exposing the welds, but I think you made the right choice. You are very lucky that color palette matches so so well. I may have similar luck with mine, I hope.
