05 LJ no crank no start

2005 LJ parked it the other night then went out turned key all accessories turned on headlights radio dash gauges but would not crank or start but can rapidly hear and feel the starter relay clicking when under hood and someome trys to Start it . Changed fuses and swapped relay Checked actuator pin no damage. Changed ignition switch and starter but still no crank or start Battery reads 12.8 positive post on starter solinoide has 12.8. Trigger wire getting no power when the key is in start position. Tried jumping from the positve post of starter to the trigger wire in on and start position but only get a single faint click from starter. Any help. Would be appreciated thanks.

The starter is brand new

Brand new just means it's never worked.

If you want pull the starter and bench test it

I'm replacing most "new" parts 2-3 times before I find a working part.

Me, I'd smack the starter with a deadblow hammer.

Its was bench tested before we installed it the starter is not the issue the trigger wire is not even getting any power if you read the post

Have you tried starting in N instead of P? The N safety switch could be bad.

If someone holds the key in Start while the starter is jumped, it should start.

You can check the schematics in the FSM under Resources.

Okay thanks jkp i will try to jump it tonight with some holding the key in the start position and see if it cranks over of it . And I have tried starting it in every position on the shifter but still did not crank at all. Appreciate the help

I vaguely remember that the 05, 06 use a position switch on the AT trans, so maybe not a normal N safety switch.

Check the FSM for no start troubleshooting.

If the battery is good, which we have not determined (a load test will determine that), I would check the cable going to the starter with an ohmmeter.
If it is fast clicking, it is not the safety switch. The safety switch would stop the trigger voltage from getting to the solenoid. The trigger wire is what is causing the solenoid to click. Double check the voltage at the trigger wire with the key in the start position. The solenoid wouldn't be clicking if it wasn't getting power. Also, if it was the neutral switch, you would be able to start it by providing power to the trigger wire from the positive cable.
What is the voltage at the battery when turning the key to start?
What is the voltage at the cable coming into the solenoid when turning the key to start?
What is the voltage at the cable leaving the solenoid when turning the key to start?
What is the voltage at the starter main cable at the starter when turning the key to start?
Can you turn the engine over by hand with a breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt?
How is the ground connection/negative cable?

Sounds like a probable bad battery or battery connection.

Check voltage at battery and starter while trying to start it (after the faint click).

Battery voltage can look perfect with no load then drop to almost nothing under load.

And check you major power connections and grounds. I offered to help a guy fix his winch once. Turned out his battery connections were horribly corroded. I was amazed anything worked. I cleaned up all the connections and everything worked, including his winch.

Or a bad cable/connection. Have you removed and cleaned the battery post connections? Are they good factory-made cables or bolt-on cable ends with corrosion and wires sticking out?

The part in bold. This is a problem. Check your grounds. Pull the starter and bench test it. Once you can get it to spin by sending 12 volts directly to the solenoid then you can start figuring out any other issues. If it never spins, then replace it. I've had good luck with new parts on the many vehicles I have worked on but I have had a few bad parts straight out of the box.

Load test your battery. I have seen a few batteries that would appear to be good when measuring voltage but fail under a large load.

Out of curiosity, what brand starter and new or rebuilt?

Have bench tested both new and old starter both work when applying 12v power to them with a booster pack. Changed out battery today with brand new one no change with anything yet. Im thinking maybe the starter relay is not grounding through the pcm to send power possibly? Voltage at starter stays the same when turning the key to start position (12.8) but still no crank or power to the trigger wire itself the relays in the pdc just buzz/chatter. there is continuity in the wire from the starter replay so not sure where to go from here will check ground connections tomorrow night. But am possibly thinking maybe a pcm if thats not it?

All lights radio gauges and everything else seem to work fine and have full power when key is in on possible or acc position

With the asd i thought they would still crank over just not start?

ASD prevents trigger voltage being sent to the starter.

So your starter and battery are good. Take a jumper wire and connect it to the solenoid terminal and then touch it to the positive terminal on the battery. Does it crank over?
