2005 4.0 wont start

Hopefully you’ll find something, but keep in mind if the timing is significantly off to the point the pcm can’t compensate you should see an error. If the ASD relay is not dropping out during cranking or when it is attempting to run a catastrophic timing error doesn’t exist.

I just ordered a fuel pressure tester with the T adapter it will be here tomorrow i think thats the next step prob to verify i have enough pressure

you say you bought it not running and it has no codes ? nobody has thought that the PO cleared them maybe trying to fix it before he sold it ? how many miles does it have on it ?

140K cranks over and sounds fine no crazy sounds just never starts .. holding to the floor and pumping the heck out of it it may kinda sound like it wants to start and never does ...and never tosses a code i have a reader i have checked ... i pulled the vin using the reader and it matched the jeep

I might be wrong but I dont think it will throw a code until it starts. if your spraying ether/starting fluid down it's throat I would think you'd get a good pop even if the timing is way off ! If you have spark that ether should get her going atleast for a few seconds. not long ago we were helping a buddy with his truck and it acted the same as your describing we never tried ether but it also was throwing no code. we changed the crank position sensor and she fired right up. hopefully thats your problem !

Just did the crank position sensor and no change at all :( waiting for fuel pressure tester to come tomorrow so i can check those numbers after that i guess is pull timing cover and check marks

dang man that really sucks ! hope you get it figured out soon
Thanks ill give it a try in the morning. i randomly get a small chug like it may think about starting but nothing that i would expect. I pulled the coil ... ran a bar down the side grounded it and cranked it and all 6 had real good spark ... i even swapped the coil to one i had bought and same thing and can smell gas just no bang yet

but did you check spark at the spark plugs ?

never mind forgot this is a 05 and it has the rail directly to the plug !

Yea my 97 has distributor and wires but i pulled the coil ran a rail down the side of the springs and i see spark at every plug ... i even swapped out the coil some results ... the fuel pressure tester kit i ordered needed a diff line to work so waiting on that now but when i had the wrong fitting in the fuel line is was gushing out so not thinking thats going to be the issue

ENGINE START-UP MODE
“This is an Open Loop mode. The following actions occur when the starter motor is engaged. The PCM receives inputs from:
• Battery voltage
• Engine coolant temperature sensor
• Crankshaft position sensor
• Intake manifold air temperature sensor
• Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
• Throttle position sensor (TPS)
• Camshaft position sensor signal
The PCM monitors the crankshaft position sensor.
If the PCM does not receive a crankshaft position sensor signal within 3 seconds of cranking the engine, it will shut down the fuel injection system.
The fuel pump is activated by the PCM through the fuel pump relay.
Voltage is applied to the fuel injectors with the ASD relay via the PCM. The PCM will then control the injection sequence and injector pulse width by turning the ground circuit to each individual injector on and off.
The PCM determines the proper ignition timing according to input received from the crankshaft position sensor.”

This is all the pcm does during startup, if the ASD is working the PCM is is working properly, at least during startup.

Make sure it can breathe.

@Wranglerfix can you help here ? hopefully Mark will jump in here and get you running again !

Sorry for the delay in responding...

@Animatedmean Do you know which brand OPDA you have? How old is your battery and have you checked all powers, grounds and anything hooked up aftermarket? If the battery is over a year old, ever died or you do not know it's history, we recommend changing it.

I can check your pcm as a courtesy in my Jeep if you would like to send it into us.

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks for the response the battery is 2 yrs old based on the sticker but im sure its been ran dead several times as i bought the jeep non running . It looks like stock ODPA based on the look compared to the rest of the engine. it had some aftermarket headlights in it i have since removed that's all i have found that wasn't oem. I will check wiring today real good but i have spark on the coil rail and compression i have fuel but will test the pressure today does not start with at all with starting fluid, i replaced the CPS with oem and no change also. I can pull the vin using my scanner off the obd2 port but not getting any errors at all. Do you think next best test is have you run a test on the PCM? This PCM would be different then my 97 correct i cant just swap? ITs a 4.0 auto also

Have you tried bypassing the ignition switch? Sometime the (lovely) piece of plastic inside the ignition tumbler can stop a Wrangler from cranking. You can mail the PCM into us and I will test it for you.

Let me know if you would like to do that and I will create an order number for you so we can keep track of your pcm.
