4.8 Swap LJ

Bad news today, this 5.3 won’t be an option without machine work. As lead time for that always go, time to start exploring.

Or maybe built someday.

A friend has a 4.8 with ground crank, new bearings sitting that I may grab in the next week and run a 4.8 with small cam.

You had water sitting in a bore? Same thing happened to my 6.0l.

Put your 5.3l crank and rods in the 4.8 to make it 5.3l(same block). Or better yet find a 6.0l block and that 5.3l crank will make it a 6.0l. The 6.0 is a thirsty mofo though.

Well, the 4.8 was ran for a race season and we determined today it spun two rod bearings so back to the drawing board… or do as you say and use my crank and rods (if good).

Check the 4.8l block, if the bores are good you have a block at least. "Race season" and "spun bearings" make me wonder though. I know a couple guys who have trashed cammed 4.8's treating them like 2 stroke motorcycle engines

Bores are reasonably good from checking. I have seen this engine race multiple times, I am familiar with it’s life.

My 5.3 also at least spun two rod bearings so it is also a boat anchor. Going to look at another short block, if it doesn’t pan out I will likely order a crate engine (5.3 reman).

Good luck. Might want to just look at the cost of the short block compared to buy a used engine & having all the machine work done.

Reman crate engines are relatively cheap, but it’s the fear of if you can trust them or not.

Have one machined would probably be ideal, though lead times are probably ugly.

I took my Magnum block in during COVID and it took over 6 month before I finally got it back. So yes lead times can SUCK...

If it's a reputable shop the short block should be OK? I guess part of that is finding the reputable shop?

Its a junkyard shortblock. Check bores, check bearings, run it if its fine.

Ended up picking it up, 4.8 short block. Bearings look good, bores are pretty good. Debating new rings and honing or not. Obviously new seals throughout.

Now that my engine fiasco is hopefully situated I ordered some parts:

Harness
GM muscle car oil pan
Seals, springs, lifters, lifter trays
Rear track bar
Received in my starter and PCM
Fuel and coolant hoses

Are you sticking with the 4.8 or going to use your 5.3 parts to make it a larger engine?

What harness did you order?

Glad to see you've got the engine fiasco worked through.

4.8. Spun rod bearings on 5.3 crank means machine work (if it can even be saved) and new rods. Ill just run a 4.8. Debating a small “towing” cam.

BP automotive harness.

I will be going away for the entire weekend but I absolutely need to decide two things,

1. Cam or just run stock
2. Rering or just leave it (nervous to cause more harm than good).

Entire gauge setup is ordered. I am getting very close to having everything on order or here to at least fire it up (plus a bunch of work to get there).
