4Low Issue

Having some trouble with my 4L.... 05 Wrangler X, 33’s, 4” suspension lift, 6-speed. I haven’t changed anything, suspension-wise from the PO (tires are the same size as what he had on it), and everything worked when I bought it.

4H works fine - runs a drives great. Put it in 4L, the 4WD light comes back on, but when I lean off the clutch it grinds like it’s slipped out of gear. I can see my 4WD shift handle pull downward slightly when I lean off the clutch like it’s not caught.

I have no clue where to start!

I find when putting it into 4L, it is easier to get it into gear if you're rolling slightly...like 1-2 MPH, barely. When I engage it clicks in nicely. It sounds like you just aren't putting it all the way into gear. Unless it is a deeper issue at hand.

This worked. I jumped the gun a little on this one. My old YJ didn’t have that issue, so I have never encountered it. I did some extra googling, and found another post on this forum I said the same thing you did. Thanks for the reply!

Glad it worked out!! Always a good feeling when it is something simple and not actually something broken. Wheel on!

You are pulling it up too far.

Just check out what I'm saying.

The other is you're bound up and need to move a tire rotation or so. Forward or backward

If you can get rolling just 1-2 mph, it slides right in. At a standstill, it can be hit or miss.

Seems that the 1-2 mph thing worked. All was good once I tried it. Didn’t have the issue at a standstill when I test drove it, so I freaked a little thinking my 4L didn’t work.

Glad to hear that! Yeah, sometimes all it takes is just slightly rocking the rig. These 4WD systems are primitive compared to the modern day electronic stuff they have.
