I am goinv to check out a 99 Sport...AT 4.0 with 112k miles in fern green (one of my favorite colors!). Aside fron the typical frame/mounts/undercarriage rust issues, anything else I should look for in yhis particular year? Thx in advance
I just got done shopping for a TJ and feel like aside from rust its just general ‘used car with over 100k’ things. The main thing I found to be common when shopping is steering issues. I drove several that were around 120k miles that needed the front end replaced and ended up buying a 99 that recently had all the front end replaced and it’s steering was night and day from the others. I wouldn’t necessarily run from one that had sloppy steering and/or death wobble.....I’d just want it cheap enough that I could replace all the front end/steering and still be in my budget.
My suggestion is to check all the suspension bushings, especially if there is a lift installed. Cheap lifts have cheap bushings and are likely to have shot bushings. I had to replace all the LCA bushings, the rear track bar, new shocks essentially had no bushings left and so on. I wish I had known more about that going into the purchase. You live and you learn though.
I second Bill, I recently bought the dream, a 03 Rubicon with 20,500 miles....had a shot skyjacker short arm kit. And old mud tires.....it drove like a pre amc CJ 5....handled like a forklift. Terrible.
New tires , shocks , long arm kit, stabilizer, disconnects and grease, now it drives and rides awesome. Driving kills em, so does sitting.
