Too bad their vision will raise energy pricing so you'll have to also have a $50k solar array and backup battery system to keep the $70k vehicle running. And every 10 years you can replace that battery for ~$14k and then every 30 years or so another solar array, not to include all of the breakdowns between then. I've messed a lot with solar and the component failures seem rather high. Maybe components will get better, but I'm not sure of the return for the average consumer.
That's OK, that's in complete keeping with today's throw away society. What's all this money down the drain to a smartphone owner who spent $1K+ for the device, plust another $1.2K/yr to run the thing? $14K for a battery array, $50K for solar panels is chump change - get with the narrative!
I'm a huge fan of solar, but it's just got a lot of issues. I've mostly just done mobile stuff. I just finished a variable setup that I can use to maintain equipment batteries, which so far is THE BEST INVESTMENT I've ever done with solar.
I'm hoping my new to me system of 2 small flexible 50 W panels ran to a charge controller mounted to a piece of wood with magnet on the back and alligator clips for hooking to batteries will be a great way for me to keep my equipment batteries topped off and it's easily flexible for 12V or 24V. I've used some other charge controllers in the past to keep batteries topped off with a lot of success vs the letting the battery sit method. Most of these batteries are over $100 each so it's a pretty quick return vs trying to supplement what the power company is providing. I'm really not sure if there's a real ROI if you have a group install a solar array, especially an off-grid 1 with some caveats about net metering. If off-grid is the only solution, the equation obviously changes and personally I really like solar vs a generator, but when I want AC, fuel and generator noise aren't as annoying as being miserably hot.
Unfortunately the energy policy is a disaster right now so I wouldn't really expect pricing to stay reasonable in the future, though I hope the US is learning their lessons that we need reliable energy at a minimum as a backup and we should make sure it's hardened. We can play with wind and solar all we want, but if you don't have a backup, then you're a fool. Also if everyone goes EV then your energy from the grid is likely going to be crazy expensive, while there will be less demand for oil...hence gas might be a bit cheaper, though production will wane accordingly, especially in the US where regulators will just put so much pressure on energy companies to prop up EV adoption.
Back to Zorba's point, we'll just need to start making disposable EVs, solar arrays, and likely even houses....Maybe there will be some sort of pod you could live in....And then why not just lease/rent everything to avoid the headache, so you'll be happy....And of course meat will be incredibly expensive, so I wonder how we could get high protein content in a max efficiency manner...
Heck why own your phone, your car, your house, your clothes? They'll just be obsolete in a few years...
Yea, I like solar too - but like anything else, it isn't the end all and be all of energy production. I designed and implemented small solar arrays for remote oceanographic buoys in another life. The biggest problem with solar isn't the panels, its the damn batteries!
