Axle part confusion

One of the upgrades I am looking at for my TJ is to change the stock axle shafts for chromoly ones. I have been looking at the Alloy USA website and have managed to really confuse myself. Help unscrambling my brain would be appreciated.

To start with I looked at part number 12148 which is a "Frt Axle Shaft Kit, Dana 30, 92-06 Cherokee & Wrangler" (Front Axle shaft Kit, 92-06 Jeep Cherokees XJ, Wranglers TJ, Dana 30 (alloyusa.com)). This sounds right for my Dana 30 '02 TJ. The kit weighs 27 pounds and is priced at $799.99.

But I then also found part number 12232 which is a "Front Grande 30 Axle Shaft Kit 92-06 XJ/TJ" (Front Grande 30 Axle Shaft Kit, 92-06 Jeep Cherokees & Wranglers (alloyusa.com)). The description of this kit seems the same as 12148 but the picture includes the additional parts needed to upgrade from the 27 to 30 spline outer axles. The kit weighs 53 pounds and costs $649.99.

So it seems the second kit provides more for less. What am I missing?

Got it. Well i would definitely skip the Alloy 30 spline outers. There was just a thread on here about a guy who went with them and the quality control was so poor that the axle stub did not fully seat inside of the hub bearing. You also are then limited to only using their 30 spline outer hub bearings, which are junk.

Stick to 27 spline outers.

OK, that's really helpful thanks. Just don't get why that kit is $150 more.

Been trying to find that thread to see what the discussion was, but no luck searching so far. Don't suppose you can point me to it?
 
He has a rubicon so it is different inner shafts, but the same outers and bearings.

Straight from Alloy USA, they are removing them due to QC issues. Still have them on websites all over the place though.
The pricing is really crazy. The Grande 30 with the extra hubs were $499 on Quadratec, and others, but the upgrade just OUTERs were $649. WHAT?!
Stay with the 27 spline.

Loud and clear, thanks for that and sorry about the experience you had reading the thread.

When a company has a pricing discrepency like that it does make me wonder how well they are run. Maybe the products are from different sources and they simply pass on the lower cost, but it certainly seems the lower price is for a reason. The thing that worries me most is the lack of engagement and customer service you experienced. I do get it that some customers push their luck these days and expect a free lunch, but in this case it is pretty clear what you were sent was not fit for purpose and that is their issue to address. Product quality and customer service are big issues for me given I would potentially be buying their product through a retailler in Poland, who has sourced it from them the US, sorting that if it goes wrong sounds next to impossible and the shipping costs to remedy would be significant.

I see you are returning for a refund, are you now going with them for 27 spline or looking elsewhere?
 
Many times, even if 'made in USA' the material was sourced from overseas (China). Sometimes they just have an excessive overstock of a particular SKU and want to move it quickly. Sometimes it's a total mystery how things get priced.
 
By the way if you need U Joints also I have a pair of new Spicer 5-760x going spare. £40 and they're yours
