Battery Question about Winch & Air Compressor

Hey everyone,
I would like to ask some questions about battery types and accessories.

For example, for my TJ 2.4 (2004) I would like to use the Warn M8000-S winch, and my T-MAX Air Compressor (Maximum Amperage Draw: 45A)

FIRST QUESTION:
How many CCA does a winch like that need? (How can I know?)

SECOND QUESTION:
Should I run my winch and air compressor from my starting battery?
Is a deep cycle battery better to run those kind of accessories?
 
I think my M8000 claimed like 500 amp draw. I'm not sure CCA is what you're worried about here, but you do need a battery that handle short bursts of high amp draw. I would think most starting batteries would be fine, but monitor your voltage when winching. Maybe some others can give better advice. Bigger is better for this application.

I guess you mentioned the dual batteries in another post and I might mention that behind your seat is a good fit for an aux battery, but if you get some AGMs you can mount them in different positions in the single space for a starting battery. From what I could tell I could get "more battery" in the space by mounting 2 in positions that weren't standing straight up like the OEM battery.

Air compressor is probably less than 30 amp draw, but I would take this from your main battery because it's normally going to be used when the engine is running.

Warn recommends a minimum of a 650 CCA battery to power the M8000 winch. According to some sources the winch has a 300 amp peak draw on start up and draws about 160 amps running. Other sources claim the amp load for the running winch motor is closer to 110 amps. Regardless, the 650 CCA starting battery capacity recommended by Warn and your stock alternator are up to the job as long as you use the proper size cables.

Your air compressor draws 30 amps maximum at start up only, considerably less once it is running.

As noted above you won't be using both winch and compressor at the same time.

A single quality starting battery with at least 650 CCA will be fine for your purposes. You don't need a second battery or a high amp alternator. You can use either a conventional flooded lead acid battery or an AGM battery

I will note that on my ZJ I have a high output alternator and an oversized AGM battery and if you hold down that winch button under load too long without revving or anything the vehicle will stop. The volts can drop substantially, which may or may not be where the 500 amps are derived. I advise watching and being easy on that winch button and if you need, for some reason to hold it down to get over some odd obstacle or something, then make a plan.

Just to note how you can find odd situations to winch out of, I pulled out a tractor that got into a really steep ditch. The implement behind actually helped get it through the first part of the ditch and sink into the second ditch. I had to bunk up the front axle, remove the implement and then rig up high on the tractor so I could pull it out and over the second ditch, so it looked like it was doing a wheelie. Luckily the plan worked and it was out and hooked back up in maybe an hour or so. Once I got the front axle up I was afraid to stop winching, so I just hammered it and hoped for the best and luckily that was fine. I was actually winching from my stock TJ and it wasn't a problem. I was probably helped that much of the weight was likely on the rear axle, so I wasn't loading the winch all that much.
