I am thinking of installing a Crown OPDA with its cps. However, have read many posts about problems with the cps. I don’t know if the problem is a sync issue or if the cps actually has a manufacturing defect. If I install one and it doesn't code, is it safe to run? Or, am I installing a defective cps? Thanks.

I'd hook up a scanner that can read the sync before you do anything.

If you have your original sensor, keep it and transfer it to the Crown unit. Keep the Crown as an emergency spare. The most important thing is getting the sensor back in sync. Anyone who has done this without a calibration tool has just been lucky to have placed the sensor within it tolerance.

A defective cam sensor will throw codes such as intermittent cam signal.
If you install it out of the tolerance window, you will get a cam/crank mismatch code.
If no codes, it is good to go.
I've never had to use a tool to sync the cam/crank. If you can set the engine to TDC and pin the OPDA on install it will most likely be in tolerance. If not, you simply tweak the OPDA position until you get rid of the code.
